ISGS is seeking to hire a Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist,Geographic Information Science (up to 4 depending on applicant pooland programmatic need) to assist and collaborate with aninterdisciplinary project team to 1) conduct geospatial analysis ofgeologic, engineering, environmental, and societal datasets, 2)facilitate access to geospatial data and analysis products internallyand on the web, and 3) develop map and data products with a goal oftranslating complex geological and social analysis into decisionsupport-input and community engagement tools that are easy tounderstand. Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Analyze, manipulate, convert, and transform geographic data in supportof project objectives.
Produce map products that are publication quality and conform tocartographic standards.
Prepare project deliverables including reports and publications,transferring geodatabases to project sponsors, making presentations, andmaintaining web applications for public data dissemination.
Add to Survey and PRI databases and knowledge through production,storage, and analysis of contract produced data.
Coordinate with staff to streamline geospatial data management from itssource to its destination to reduce the time required to meet projectobjectives and maintain quality.
Prepare and compile comprehensive and detailed metadata for datadocumentation and data applications, including description of their usein workflows.
Contribute to grant proposals for funding to support scientificinformation management including data preservation, maintenance, andenhancement including innovative methods and software.
Assist and consult with management, researchers, and staff on geospatialdata management.
Train and mentor students.
Digitize and georeference historical records and geospatial data.
Research and acquire open-source geospatial data related to projectneeds.
Use spatial analysis, statistics, historical records, and other methodsto perform quality control on maps and geospatial datasets.
Compile tabular data and translate tabular databases into geospatialformats.
Respond to requests for information and provide technical expertise toPRI staff, government agencies, non-governmental organizations,academia, industry, and the public.
Prepare graphics and GIS files for distribution on the web.
Support Survey and PRI staff with data collection, interpretation andanalysis.
Collaborate with Survey staff, University of Illinois faculty, andexternal colleagues to provide integrated interpretations andapplications to existing and new research programs.
Enhance the reputation of the Survey and PRI at the state, national, andinternational levels.
Represent the Survey and PRI at meetings and other venues in areas ofexpertise.
Contribute to the areas of education, outreach, and/or other service tothe Survey, PRI, the University of Illinois, and the state of Illinois.
Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
Perform other duties as nee ed to further the mission and goals of PRI.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor\'s degree in geology or geographicinformation science. Alternate degree fields in the sciences (e.g.,natural resources, environmental science, engineering, computer science,data science, information science) will be considered/accepted dependingon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to thisposition. At least 2 years\' related industry or research experiencewith a bachelor\'s degree. Esri ArcGIS software experience, includingability to update geodatabases in ArcGIS Pro, manage data in ArcCatalog,utilize Product Libraries and various data editing toolbars. Validdriver\'s license. Preferred Qualifications: Master\'s degree ingeology or geographic information science. Alternate degree fields thesciences (e.g., natural resources, environmental science, engineering,computer science, data science, information science) will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as itrelates to this position.
