Job Description:
Perform a variety of diagnostic techniques and assays in the areas of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, mycoplasma, serology, virology and parasitology to identify pathogens of veterinary importance. Examples of techniques and assays include, but are not limited to, culture set-up, delineation, identification and susceptibility testing of pathogens of veterinary importance, biochemical tests, immunofluorescent assays, ELISAs, PCR’s, fecal flotations, sedimentations and direct smears. Incumbent proactively triages and processes specimens appropriately for the test requested and in a timely manner. Also, enters lab results and/or charges in the correct account or medical record promptly, sends test results to outside clients; prepares specimens for shipments to referral labs as needed. May be required to obtain certification in testing for Equine Infectious Anemia and provide monthly processing reports to the USDA.
Performs preventive maintenance and quality control on laboratory equipment and analytical procedures at required intervals. Documents maintenance, QC, and repairs to equipment in the indicated by out-of-range quality control results, and verifies patient results that may have been affected. Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of laboratories. Maintain inventory of hazardous waste and schedule pick-up of waste by Environmental Health and Safety. Properly process and dispose of hazardous, biohazardous and biomedical waste.
Maintain laboratory supplies inventory and perform weekly ordering of supplies with approval of Laboratory Manager.
Assist in development of work instructions with approval of Laboratory Manager.
Perform various clerical duties including, results reporting into the hospital information system, faxing and e-mailing results to outside clinics and prepare request forms for shipment to referring laboratories.
Assist and train other personnel as needed and dictated by expertise.

Expected Salary:
$18.00 - $23.00 / hourly
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in clinical microbiology or other biology related field and three years of relevant laboratory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Good organizational skills, attention to details and accurate record keeping are essential. Candidate must be willing to follow directions (written or verbal instructions) from the supervisor and be quick to learn techniques and procedural steps to specific assays.
