  Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the University Police Officer 2 Civil Service state examination, and be reachable on the appropriate current Civil Service list. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a provisional appointment may be made. Any provisional appointee will be required to take, pass and be reachable on the next Civil Service examination to be permanently appointed. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Must be able to perform mandatory overtime. Duties may be performed at either Stony Brook main campus or Southampton campus.

  Brief Description of Duties: The University Police Officer 2 will be responsible for the following duties:

  Assigns University Police Officers, Campus Public Safety Officers and Security Services Assistants to mobile and foot patrol and dispatch/desk assignments in order to effectively and efficiently utilize staff to ensure adequate security coverage.

  Prepares and maintains schedule rosters for uniformed and civilian staff; alters schedules to provide coverage of anticipated periods of peak demands for security services; receives, reviews and approves or disapproves requests for leave. Conducts training for officers during shift briefings and as assigned by the Chief of Police. Instructs University Police Officer personnel in preparation for shift assignments to ensure subordinates are informed of current trends, current security concerns and are informed of new policies and procedures.

  Inspects personnel for necessary equipment of University Police Officer for compliance with University Police regulations; when appropriate will direct subordinates to make necessary corrections.Meets with subordinates to discuss both criminal and non-criminal report preparation. Makes decisions using knowledge of police procedures, state, county and municipal law, university policy and current labor contracts. Ensures department policy and procedures are complied with by University Police Department personnel. Counsels members of the Department when necessary and in accordance with prescribed guidelines.Prepares official written account of shift activities, maintains log and reviews and approves other written documents to include the Daily Bulletin, Bi-Weekly time records, etc. Personally acknowledges good and superior performance; offers constructive criticism and suggests ways to improve performance; listens attentively to subordinates' questions and problems and responds with workable solutions and answers. This may include conducting investigations into minor infractions of officers and making determinations of facts and recommends corrective or disciplinary action to the supervisor as necessary.Patrols campus; inspects and sign notebooks, meets with subordinates regularly throughout the shift and responds to incidents as necessary. Special Notes: These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, shift and pass days varied. Weekend work required. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
