Summary
This is a day-shift position at University Hospital and includes a weekend rotation.
Independently performs general diagnostic ultrasound examinations in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, performing the ultrasound exam and communicating findings to the Radiologist.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for efficient patient throughput, patient scheduling, equipment troubleshooting, and quality assessment.The sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations independently.
Uses sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
Use independent judgment to acquire optimal diagnostic information in each examination performed.
Ability to evaluate and communicate diagnostic information to the attending physician.
Communicate effectively with the patient and health care team, recognizing the special needs of each patient.
Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospital/clinical staff or outside referring clinics.
Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
Maintains knowledge of and observes Universal precautions and all other precautions determined by Michigan Medicine
Understands and applies Guest Relations skills and displays excellent customer service skill (following the Department of Radiology?s Service Excellent Program). Must always follow HIPAA and patient confidentiality. As well as excellent teamwork skills.
Effectively operate sonographic equipment.
Assists with the daily operations of the department.
Adapt to changing environments (flexible schedules, emergency conditions, protocol development, technology advancements).
Ability to follow established departmental procedures and policies.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Provides correct data entry for exam billing (CPT/ICD-10 codes).
Enter correct data within the PACS system.
Maintains ultrasound equipment, clean work area, and adequate supplies.
Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations and a high-level, fast-paced medical environment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General supervision is received from a Physician or other designated official.QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.Required Licenses/Certifications
Active certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in ABD and/or OB-GYN.
Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for ABD and/or OB-GYN.Current BCLS Certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties:
Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs), and to move and transport patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning. Maintain awkward scanning, sitting, and standing positions for extended periods of time.
Must be able to push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to operate and use multiple computer programs in an efficient manner.
Ability to concentrate and focus attention, thoughts and efforts on patients and equipment for varying periods of time.
RISK OF EXPOSURE TO BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS
Category I - Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
Required Qualifications*
ARDMS certification in either Abd or OB-Gyn
Desired Qualifications*
1-year of work experience in an Inpatient hospital environment.
ARDMS certified in both Abd and OB-gyn

Background Screening
