  The Role

  Designs and delivers programs to train all levels of personnel. Develops tests and visual aids, conducts training classes, and develops criteria for evaluating effectiveness of training activities. Keeps abreast of training and development research: learning theory, motivation theory, and new materials, methods, and techniques. Develops in-house programs and practices to identify developmental needs, including preparing personnel for more responsible positions and increasing effectiveness in present assignments. May evaluate and/or oversee contractors or vendors to develop and/or administer training programs. May be responsible for development of e-learning programs.

  Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for an Apprentice Academic Instructor to join their team. There are three major purposes of the Apprentice Academic Instructor’s role. The first is to instruct, advise, and evaluate apprentices and pre-apprentices in one or more of the academic courses in the Apprentice School Curriculum. The second major purpose is to assist the manger, Academics in daily duties and special projects that support the overall functioning of the School. The third major purpose is to support the Craft Training, Admissions, and extracurricular activities/programs of The Apprentice School.

  Must Have

  Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 4 year of relevant professional experience

  One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  NNS Apprentice School graduate

  Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

  Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience

  Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience

  High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience

  High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience

  Nice to Have

  Knowledge of State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) requirements, experience with college accreditation, and familiarity with instructional and course management technology as well as course design . Master’s degree with 18 graduate credits in Communications, History, Mathematics, Physics, or Psychology. Experience in drafting and/or ship construction is desired. Leadership, managerial, analytical and administrative skills/abilities are necessary, along with well-developed writing and communication skills and a working knowledge of The Apprentice School at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding.
