Summary You will serve as a TRAINING INSTRUCTOR in the MARINER SKILLS TRAINING CENTER of SURFACE WARFARE OFFICERS SCHOOL. Responsibilities You will provide safe navigation, seamanship and ship handling principles training and instruction to Naval Officers; demonstrate the skill and knowledge that is needed to ensure safe navigation, seamanship and ship handling is taught. You will develop curriculum to support instruction on navigation, seamanship and ship handling principles in the arts and sciences of ship handling surface combatant ships throughout the Fleet. You will provide instructional techniques and competency assessment methods involving use of bridge simulators, advanced shiphandling principles, maneuvering characteristics for Surface Ship, Automatic RADAR Plotting Aids (ARPA), and VMS operations. You will have an understanding of teaching students in the Conning Officer Virtual Environment (COVE) simulators in applying lessons learned in practical seamanship manner. You will assess competency of students on midterms and finals assessments before graduating course. You will ensure students understand and have the ability to apply the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) Rules of The Road and safe navigational tactics. You will have experience in facilitating lessons in shiphandling, navigation, bridge resource management in a classroom setting while keeping students engaged by utilizing lessons and referencing professional experience. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Providing instruction or training to students/personnel on navigation, seamanship and ship handling principles; 2) Developing curriculum to support instruction on navigation, seamanship and ship handling principles; 3) Utilizing simulators and other computer-based ship handling training systems to provide instruction for students; and 4) Assessing competency of student/personnel in meeting learning or training objectives in navigation, seamanship and ship handling principles.
