  Responsibilities

  Position Summary:

  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to research investigating the molecular mechanisms of disease in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy using in vivo and histological techniques, and evaluating potential novel therapies. Ideal candidates will have experience directly managing and supervising research projects throughout a project lifecycle. Candidate must be detail-orientated, self-motivated, a quick learner, collaborate well with team members, and have excellent problem-solving skills. Applicants must be passionate about conducting scientific research, demonstrate ethics and integrity, and can work both independently and as an effective member of a team with research and clinical staff.

  Responsibilities:

  Perform complex studies in mice and tissues using technical independence and guidance from the PI.

  Oversee multiple lines of mice through breeding and genotyping. Handling mice for routine maintenance, treatment, euthanasia, dissection, and tissue preparation.

  Expose mice to hyperoxia, administer drugs and chemicals to mice intraperitoneally and intravitreally or as an eye drop for study purposes.

  Perform molecular genetics studies on mice tissues using state-of-the art methods such as histology, immunohistochemistry, PCR, western blotting, ELISAs, RT-PCR, RNA Seq, Flow Cytometry to study changes in gene expression and tissue fate.

  Perform complex physiological assessments on experimental mice

  Learn and independently operate retinal imaging systems to in live, anesthetized mice. Training will be provided.

  Interpret results of retinal imaging and analyze results within experimental groups.

  Perform retinal extraction and extraction of other body tissues of mice. Training will be provided.

  Write detailed laboratory reports and experimental methods.

  Write detailed experimental design and results in a research laboratory notebook and electronic lab records with minimal supervision by the PI. Convert those reports to drafts of manuscript methods and results.

  Create professional, publication-ready figures to include in manuscripts and presentations.

  Scientifically review and critique research and documents written by other members of the laboratory.

  Oversees equipment and supplies in the laboratory.

  Able to oversee maintenance, management, and/or repair of equipment. Trains people in the proper use of equipment.

  Make decisions on the purchase, repair, and replacement of equipment with PI approval

  Evaluate cost, capabilities, and use of equipment and supplies, and provide informed recommendations on purchases to the PI.

  Oversees regulatory issues for the laboratory .

  Ensures the laboratory and its members are compliant with biosafety, environmental health, radiation, and use of animals as required by local and federal laws.

  Create and write standard operating procedures for the proper use of equipment. Organization of existing operating procedures of the laboratory.

  Ensures that compliance paperwork is maintained and available for review.

  Other duties as assigned

  Demonstrates ability to maintain lab functioning when PI is away from lab performing clinical duties.

  Qualifications:

  Bachelor's degree with major course work in field of assignment, and 2 year of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and education required.

  Prefer a 4-year college degree in biomedical sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer 2 years’ experience in scientifically related field

  Takes pride in work. Preferred knowledge in handling and working with mice preferred.

  Maintains all relevant animal training for mice per University protocols and guidelines preferred.

  Pay Range

  Pay Range: $25.72 - $36.01 Hourly

  The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
