Job Summary:The Nonprofit Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues. In this role, the Nonprofit Tax Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, and recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies. In addition, the Nonprofit Tax Manager will be critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and actively participate in the marketing and networking within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties:Tax Compliance:Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM")Conducts review of T/R's and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriatePlans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriateReview of ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statementsPlans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include:Budgeting and staffingMonitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of SeniorTimely billing including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to clientTimely collection of A/RManages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the projectProvides advice to clients in a timely mannerResearch:Identifies when research is needed; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysisApplies most Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returnsInvolves firm specialists, as appropriateTax Consulting:Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients' current and future taxesApplies the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutionsDevelops and implements a work plan to include/organize the STS assistance on ongoing projects from clientFrames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associatesServes as a technical resource to peers within the regionManages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistanceFrames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associatesEnsures client service teams comply with Firm policy; regarding Written Tax Advice ("WTA")Strategy Development:Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefitsReviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of actionResearches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideasIdentifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and offers input on how to improve processes and methodsOther duties as requiredSupervisory Responsibilities:Supervises associates and senior associates on all projectsReviews wo
