SVM - Demonstrator, Molecular Biology
St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Demonstrator position, in the department of Pathobiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2024.
Job Description
Objective
Contribute to SVM research and enhance the knowledge, growth and overall development of the veterinary and graduate students through contribution to courses administered by the Department through the delivery of assigned lectures, engaging small groups, reviewing and contributing to course material, developing and reviewing exam questions.
Essential Functions
Instructional Activities:
Deliver lecture content in advanced molecular techniques course or other graduate courses
Deliver instruction in molecular biology/Next gen sequencing (NGS) techniques to graduate/veterinary students and faculty
Participate in the graduate and professional curriculum.
Participate in developing the syllabus outline by providing objectives and examination questions for each assigned lecture.
Assist in conducting and examination grading in compliance with the SVM Examination Policy.
Research and Scholarly Activities:
Actively engage in scholarly activities that support collaborative research at the SVM. Provide student research opportunities and training in molecular biology methods/NSG. Research areas of emphasis at SGUSVM include vector-borne disease, zoonotic disease and public health, aquatic animal health, parasitology, bacteriology/Mycology, pathology/clinical pathology, and clinical sciences.
Participate in graduate student/faculty education and mentoring
Service
Manage the molecular biology and NGS laboratory equipment/sops/refrigerators/freezers and provide diagnostic testing support for tick-borne diseases and rabies testing
Participate in the following University activities:
Faculty Senate
Departmental Meetings (when required)
Departmental Faculty evaluations (when required)
SVM Faculty Meetings (when required)
Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)
Outreach efforts in the local community (i.e., One Health One Medicine program, CaribVet)
General
Take responsibility as an advisor of assigned students.
Establish appropriate opportunities for interaction with students in addition to scheduled lectures. (Ten hours per week of faculty-student interaction are required of faculty not teaching in a laboratory and six office hours for those who have laboratory assignments
Qualifications
BSc with documented experience in molecular biology/NGS techniques MSc or PhD preferred.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic knowledge and first experience on and/or eagerness to learn
General experience in molecular biology techniques (PCR, real time PCR, libraries, managing sample storage, inventory, in molecular biology laboratory and freezers and refrigerators
Advanced methods of sample extraction suitable for metagenomics under appropriate biosafety and chemical safety precautions
Advanced library preparation methods for metagenomics sequencing approaches using the Oxford Nanopore Technologies NGS system
Advanced data analysis preferably managed by LIMS system

Hours and Travel
A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm
Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am – 5 pm on campus for in-person classroom/laboratory, diagnostics, and research, otherwise available by email or remote means for meetings.
Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration
Special Instructions to Applicants:
This is a full time position in the Caribbean island of Grenada.
Candidates must be fully vaccinated with a WHO approved vaccine, and be willing to show proof of vaccination to be considered for employment.
