  Position Summary

  The Supervisor of Accessioning, Liquid Profiling is responsible for overseeing all clerical and ancillary duties, ensuring that case workflow is operating consistently, and testing turn-around times are being managed appropriately. They oversee accessioning of cases and quality control checks of patient reporting. They have direct line supervision of all Specimen Processing Clerks, managing employee schedules and training, as well as, resolving any professional conflicts that may arise. The supervisor troubleshoots any problems with workflow, manages specimen turn-around times and communicates directly with management regarding exceptions, varied timelines, etc. They are also responsible for managing all regulatory activities, enforcing consistent adherence to required regulatory guidelines to ensure the highest quality and consistency of services. While maintaining job functions, the Supervisor of Accessioning also interacts with other departments to ensure an optimal case flow is consistently achieved and all standard laboratory procedures and policies are followed.

  Accountability/Scope

  Supervises staff and oversees case accessioning, quality report checks, and oversees all case workflow activities.

  Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

  Documents all corrective action taken when a system deviates from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

  Manages employee schedules and is responsible for approving/declining time off and bi-weekly timecards.

  Assists with the tracking, accumulation, and computation of performance metrics.

  Ensures Accessioning has adequate inventories of supplies.

  Resolves employee relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required.

  Acts as first point of contact on questions. Keeps team informed of new processes and general updates.

  Maintains the diagnostic viability of all specimens within the Accessioning Department and monitors correct patient labeling of all materials.

  Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support other departments as required.

  Understands Accessioning protocols as set forth by lab management team; communicates questions/clarifies uncertainties.

  Actively engages leadership for instruction and growth.

  Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of the Accessioning workspace and applicable equipment/resources.

  Consistently exhibits a professional demeanor in the workplace and works to maintain positive relationships with peers and management.

  Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval, and accurate record keeping.

  Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.

  Logs appropriate information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other logs as necessary.

  Responsible for Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) of cases moving through the laboratory.

  Develops new protocols and SOPs to address problems and improve quality and safety within Accessioning.

  Works cross-functionally with various departments including Customer Support, IHC, PAs, Pathologists, Lab Operations, Block Returns, and Reporting.

  Effectively manages complex cross-functional activities within and outside the lab with a high degree of independence and strong managerial judgement, and regularly plays a strong Quality Control (QC) role with all lab operations.

  Manages the recruitment and training of new hires, as well as provides coaching and feedback to employees regarding performance goals and opportunities for improvement.

  Proficient in troubleshooting problems and successfully maintains workflow in the lab.

  Is consistently viewed by teammates, supervisors, and management as professional, positive, solution-orientated and a leader within the Accessioning Team.

  Responsible for identifying and utilizing resources to overcome challenges. Resources include documentation (SOPs, Job Aids, etc.) and human resources (peers, trainers, and leaders).

  Actively participates in department recruitment activities.

  Accept other duties as assigned.

  Required Qualifications

  High School diploma or equivalent required.

  Two to five years of experience in general laboratory operations required.

  Conditions of Employment: Individuals must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, and reference verification.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline, preferred.

  2+ years’ experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory.

  2+ years’ experience in a supervisor capacity preferred.

  Physical Demands

  Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.

  May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemical including formalin in the lab environment.

  Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.

  Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.

  Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
