About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the 2024 summer staff. Summer camp and interpretation at the Western North Carolina Nature Center focuses on zoology, natural history, and recreation. We are looking for staff who are energetic and engaging, have strong leadership skills and the ability to model responsible mature behavior as they facilitate a variety of outdoor and indoor activities for youth.
This staff member will also be responsible for engaging with Nature Center guests through a variety of interpretation methods. This role is designed to educate the public about native wildlife while also ensuring positive guest experiences.
Programs are subject to change based on public health recommendations. All applicable
public health recommendations will be followed during camp including for mask wearing,
hand washing, and social distancing.
Number of openings: 5
Pay: $17.00 hourly
Schedule: Shift hours will be 8:15-5:15. Four of these positions will work Monday-Friday, while one position will work Tuesday-Saturday.
This is a temporary/seasonal position with a start date of Monday, June 3, 2024 and an ending date of Friday August 9, 2024 with the option of adding an additional one-two weeks before and/or after.
This temporary/seasonal position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.
This position is open until filled with applications being reviewed regularly.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
This position will include some or all of the following duties:
Leads activities for youth ages 5-10 (rising 1st-4th graders) from established lesson plansfocused on natural history, ecology, and fun with rising 1st-4th graders
Organizes, facilitates, and participates in all activities including crafts, games, and natureexploration
Manages activity schedules
Responsible for camper safety, providing a fun and nurturing environment, and classroom
management
Administers first aid as neededSupervises campers and is responsible for behavior management as needed
Communicates with the Camp Director about all camp happenings
Engages with visitors (including children and adults) through interpretation activities included
but not limited to a roving naturalist role, leading guests through hands-on stations and
introducing a variety of biofacts
Interact directly with nature center guests and ensure a positive guest experience
Maintains a positive attitude and professional demeanor at all times
Assists in maintaining cleanliness of camp and public facilities
Performs related tasks as required
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent
Experience working with youth
Experience in working with the general public or experience in customer service
Experience and/or coursework in environmental/conservation education (preferred)
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be willing to take and able to pass City provided Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certification class (unless currently certified)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
? General knowledge of the methods and practices of outdoor recreation and environmental
education, group management, and appropriate discipline techniques
? Experience leading crafts and games with youth
? Ability to lead indoor and outdoor activities
? Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain program standards
? Ability to maintain program records
? Ability to provide educational opportunities for diverse audiences
? Ability to connect with a diverse group of people in order to ensure positive guest experiences
? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants,
and camp families.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings in all weather conditions
Able to handle extended periods of standing and physical activities
Physical ability to hike 2 miles on uneven terrain
