Job Description:
L3Harris is seeking qualified individuals to join our Aeronautical Systems Engineering team as a Senior Specialist Stress Engineer. In this role, you will perform structural analysis of aircraft structure using classical analysis methods to develop free body diagrams, calculate internal loads and stresses, and write margins of safety. You will lead a small team of other stress engineers by mentoring them on technical problems and managing their budget and schedule performance. You will also support the development of engineering estimates for bids and provide input to a regular labor forecast for you team. Stress Engineers have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of tasks and aircraft modifications on various aircraft platforms.
Essential Functions:
Use classical hand analysis and/or create finite element models to predict internal loads, displacements, and stresses for complex structure
Collaborate with Design Engineers to substantiate aircraft modifications and installations and ensure the design meets airworthiness requirements
Document structural analysis in formal reports to show compliance with airworthiness requirements and develop structural tests and post-process the results to establish allowable strength data
Mentor and lead other engineers in performing structural analysis
Estimate engineering labor hours for formal bids and manage labor forecasts for a small team of engineers
Clearance if desired, ability to travel, working extended hours
Qualifications:
US Citizenship
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Aeronautical Engineering, or related engineering field at an accredited university and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related
Good computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Able to generate free body diagrams and calculate internal loads and stresses
Must be able to travel to and from flight line and work in aircraft hangar environments (some positions will require the ability to board/exit aircraft)
Willingness to travel
Active Secret Clearance
Preferred Additional Skills:
A minimum of 8 years of relevant aircraft structural analysis
Finite element modeling with commercial software, including Femap and Nastran
Automating calculations using VBA in Excel or another programming language
Reviewing engineering design data with CAD and PLM software, including NX and Teamcenter
Structural substantiation of aircraft structure with classical analysis
Exposure to FAA and military airworthiness requirements for static strength
Experience in engineering leadership
