With an unmatched reach at the national and local level, Gannett touches the lives of millions with our Pulitzer Prize-winning content, consumer experiences and benefits, and advertiser products and services.

We also own digital marketing services companies under the brand LocaliQ, which provide a cloud-based platform of products to enable small and medium-sized businesses to accomplish their marketing goals. In addition, our portfolio includes one of the largest media-owned events businesses in the U.S., USA TODAY NETWORK Ventures.

The News Journal/DelawareOnline.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking an experienced reporter who can cover the complexities of state government in a way that not only resonates with our readers but attracts a new audience that may not be interested in traditional political reporting. The successful candidate will go beyond the votes and insider baseball to write issue-based enterprise and watchdog stories about what is going on in the capitol, the impact it will have on people's lives and the issues raised along the way. And of course, we can't forget about the local impact of our hometown President Joe Biden.

We want a reporter who can find new and innovative ways to get readers information on who voted which way and what bills are up for serious consideration, while also balancing the bigger picture of Delaware impact. We want someone who can recognize what measures will gain traction and why, then is able to explain them in a digestible way. We want a watchdog reporter who will tell readers how their money is being spent and who is pulling the strings to get that money. It's not about following the legislation turn by turn. It's about following the issues important to residents of Delaware and keying in on what they're concerned about. This successful candidate will spend more time outside of the capitol than inside, talking with people about issues that matter to them, then finding out what the state is doing about those issues.

In short, we want someone who writes for readers, not legislators and government employees. This beat requires a reporter who can juggle multiple assignments and work on breaking news as well as short- and long-term enterprise. You must understand analytics and how to use that information to your advantage.

  Video skills are a must.

  Here are some other requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience at a daily news organization.

  • Familiarity with digital storytelling tools and techniques.

  • Outstanding core journalism skills, including writing, spelling, grammar and AP style.

  • Must thrive in a competitive news market while possessing a collaborative spirit.

  • Deep understanding of journalism ethics.

  • Experience with social media, online metrics, third party tools and content management systems.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  HOW TO APPLY

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

Your resume - one to two pages. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job. Links to 3-5 online samples of your work. Show us what you've produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled in a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration
