Overview

Tanaq Environmental, LLC. (Tanaq) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to local, state, and federal agencies in the areas of hazardous toxic waste restoration, environmental compliance, emerging contaminants, and military munitions site management. Tanaq is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Alaskan native community and shareholders.

Position Summary

Tanaq is seeking a Staff Geologist I to support geologic projects and hydrogeologic investigations, environmental restoration, and compliance projects with oversight from a Project Geologist or a Project Manager. Works with other geologists, scientists, engineers, and/or field technicians on field investigations that include well drilling and installation, environmental investigations, and remediation efforts at various project locations.

This is a hybrid remote work role that can be based from anywhere in the U.S. and requires an estimated 75% or more annual travel to the United States.

Responsibilities

Oversee the operation of drilling subcontractors.

Log soil samples and drill cuttings and prepare soil boring logs and well construction records.

In collaboration with a Project Geologist, determine the appropriate well construction details based on lithologic findings.

Conduct aquifer testing, including slug tests and aquifer pumping tests.

Evaluate aquifer testing data to determine aquifer and formation characteristics.

Support preparation of subcontract specifications for drilling and subsurface investigation subcontractors.

Support competitive procurement of drilling and subsurface investigation subcontractors.

May serve as Field Team Leader during field investigations, leading sampling of groundwater, soil, sediment, and surface water for laboratory analysis.

Support preparation of lithologic logs, potentiometric surface maps, geographic information system (GIS) maps, and tables presenting results of field investigations.

Draft technical reports that include descriptions of geology, hydrogeology, extent of contamination, and fate and transport of site contaminants.

Support the development of site remediation processes, including removal actions and in-situ treatment.

Support remediation planning, including preparation of planning and safety documents.

Oversee contractors conducting site remediation field activities, including groundwater injections and removal actions.

Review drilling subcontractor invoices and evaluate subcontractor performance in accordance with approved plans.

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

Minimum 1 year of relevant field experience as geologist. Experience with environmental geology and investigations preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

Organizational skills and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.

The ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations, providing a consistently high level of quality and accuracy.

Professional demeanor with a positive, solution-seeking attitude, team player, and personal responsibility.

Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations to perform job duties.

Education and Training

Minimum bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or related field from accredited institution.Physical Requirements

Must be able and willing to travel to visit job sites, attend client meetings, and/or attend professional or technical conferences, and the ability to travel, typically 75% or more annually, in the United States.

Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, and vibration.

This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with field work, including walking long distances, climbing ladders, and carrying equipment. Bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching are essential functions of the job.

Position requires frequent (more than 50% of workday) performance of repetitive bending stooping, standing/walking, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, and lifting less than 25-50 pounds. Often (25-50% of workday) performing work with arms above shoulder level, and keyboard/mouse operations. Occasionally (10-25% of workday) performing repetitive fine hand movements and lifting 50-75 pounds. Rarely (less than 10% of workday), climbing stairs, using portable ladders, working in an environment of heavy, moving, dangerous equipment, and working in confined spaces.

Position will require wearing associated personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hats/safety helmets, hearing protection, and respirator.

Good near and far vision (corrected to 20/40) is necessary to accurately measure instruments, record data in field logs, and identify potential hazards in the field.

Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and while working on a computer.
