For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free,high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including; eviction andforeclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more.
As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousandsof poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney.
With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
OFFICE LOCATION: Suffolk County
DUTIES INCLUDE: Nassau Suffolk Law Services is seeking a full-time attorney to assist in thecoordination of the Suffolk County Pro Bono Project. Under the supervision of the and in collaborationwith the Suffolk County Bar Association's Pro Bono Foundation, the Pro Bono Coordinator will beresponsible for engaging in an active recruitment effort aimed at increasing the participation of volunteer attorneys in Suffolk County, as well as planning recognition events aimed at retention of those volunteers.
Creating new pro bono initiatives and coordinating volunteer attorney training and CLE programs are also important priorities.The Coordinator will assist and supervise the Pro Bono Project's staff in client and case screening, client intake and evaluation, case assignments, case status tracking and statistical reports using our data system software. It is expected that the Coordinator will also assist in the recruitment, training and oversight ofboth attorney and non-attorney in-house volunteers (e.g., student interns) to assist in the screening of pro-bono applicants. The Coordinator will assist in the maintenance of the existing pro bono caseload,responding to client and/or volunteer attorney concerns and questions on existing matters, and assist with the coordination of regularly scheduled Bankruptcy, Matrimonial and other legal programs.START DATE: Immediate
SALARY: $66,000-$92,561, DOE Union scale; Excellent Benefits
REQUIREMENTS: Admission to the New York State Bar. Experience working with disabled anddisadvantaged clients preferred. A strong professional network within the Suffolk County Bar is aplus.
