This position will be a recognized technical expert in the discipline of materials science and engineering, including strategic materials selection, problem solving, and applied research. The position will support the Global Operations & Supply Chain Operations Innovation team, focused on transformational change driving best in class performance.
This position will also influence materials strategy, identifying technologies and initiatives needed to develop cost-effective and reliable products capable of scaling with market growth. The appointed candidate will contribute to the execution of the strategies and actions to address those needs.
The individual will serve as a materials engineering expert for materials selection, processing, process-property-performance relationships for medical devices satisfying long-range complex strategic initiatives.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned
· As an expert in your professional discipline within the organization, you will serve as a materials technical expert by contributing to the strategic initiatives of the business of new products, processes, standards, or operational plans based on business strategy.
· You will face materials problems which are wide ranging in difficulty, requiring broad-based consideration of many materials science fundamentals and variables that would impact multiple areas of the organization.
· Lead strategic functional initiatives identified by leadership and scout prospective material technology development projects to accomplish objectives.
· Possesses proven expertise in the following business critical skill sets:
o Materials, including polymers, metals, electronics,and ceramics
o Breadth Knowledge of Materials Science failure analysis technics
o Surface sciences and associated analytical techniques
· Ability to coordinate and conduct laboratory work and data analysis to drive technical materials engineering decisions.
· Contribute to the materials engineering design Drive material technology selection in alignment with Operating Units’ (OU) strategies, Technology Development Centers (TDCs) and external trends with long-range impact on results.
· Partner with the global manufacturing network, OUs, TDCs and strategically influence integrate best practices, and define/refine materials technology roadmaps.
· Partner with internal and external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Universities, etc. to advance materials development for MDT products in advance of business need.
· Maintains a focus on quality, possesses the necessary drive and determination to promote the highest level of customer satisfaction, quality, reliability, performance, cost and development predictability.
· Serve as the principal materials engineering spokesperson to foster an inclusive culture with sufficient credibility to discuss subject matter freely with all levels of management, project leaders, technical peers and junior colleagues alike.
· Interacts with internal and external customers plus vendors at various levels.
· Provides guidance, coaching and training to other materials engineering employees, mentors junior staff and broadly shares experience and knowledge across the organization.
· Provides consulting and support for unplanned but critical needs.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree required
Requires a University Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
Nice to Have
· Bachelor’s of Science in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or equivalent materials engineering discipline and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with an advanced degree.
· Comprehensive knowledge of mechanics of materials, metals processing technologies
· Track record of innovation and delivering strategic business results in the context of materials engineering solutions.
· Knowledge of materials process technologies and their impact on material behavior and product performance, i.e., Process-Property-Performance relationships.
· In-depth knowledge and expertise in microscopy and failure analysis, surface sciences plus associated analytical techniques.
· Expertise in materials with the ability to identify and develop testing methods, correlate material properties with product performance and predict various failure modes.
· Knowledge of external standards, e.g., ASTM and ISO and their use, limitations, and applications.
· Demonstrated ability to apply skills and knowledge of technical/operational theories and principles to resolve real-world biomaterials challenges.
· Demonstrated ability to deliver quality technical work within project schedules and timelines.
· Knowledge of statistical methods and Design of Experiments (DoE)
· Knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
· Advanced degree in materials engineering or equivalent materials engineering discipline.
· Knowledge of Design, Reliability & Manufacturability (DRM) and Six Sigma improvement methodology.
