Job Description
Working with RD partners and other members of the Intellectual Property Department, the newly created role of Sr. Patent Manager, Instrumentation Practice Group will lead a high performing team of patent agents supporting the Life Science Solutions Group (LSG)’s patent portfolio relating to instruments, equipment, and devices (hardware and software) across all LSG’s businesses. In addition to handling patent prosecution for the highest value and/or most complex products within LSG, this individual, together with the Senior Director, Patent Prosecution - LSG, will manage their team’s efforts to ensure consistent IP asset quality, set and drive adoption of best practices, leverage metrics and data to drive value and efficiency, and further develop team members, all in the interest of fostering a culture of excellence in patent prosecution.
The successful candidate in this role will therefore need to have exceptionally strong patent prosecution skills, demonstrated ability to craft patent portfolio strategy, possess a process-improvement mindset and demonstrated training and leadership capabilities. This role reports directly to the Senior Director, Patent Prosecution - LSG.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Instrumentation Practice Group within the LSG Patent Prosecution Team, ensuring a close connection between business goals and patent asset generation
Expand business leadership’s ability to use intellectual property as a commercial lever by developing tighter connection between patent portfolio strategy and product/research roadmaps across the LSG business
Lead the team in creating opportunities for direct business value by drafting and prosecuting targeted pieces of intellectual property
Practice a data-driven PPI mindset to patent prosecution, identifying and implementing efficient ways to allocate work, drive value and efficiency, and increase overall ROI of patent assets through excellence in patent prosecution
Under the guidance of the Vice President, Intellectual Property – LSG and Senior Director of Patent Prosecution – LSG, and together with others in the IP Department, implement consistent risk mitigation activities for product launches as well as through the protection of trade secret and confidential information
Actively engage direct reports to build leadership capabilities as Thermo Fisher continues to grow in line with its 2030 Vision
Required Experience and Skills:
8+ years of experience preparing and successfully prosecuting U.S. and/or international patent applications related to hardware or software inventions.
Advanced degree in a science or engineering field and ability to understand a diverse spectrum of instrumentation, mechanical technologies, and software; experience with biology/chemistry is a plus
Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Experience with IP Litigation is a plus
