TITLE : Sr. EHS Specialist
LOCATION : Kankakee, IL
SALARY : $100-120,000
JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. EHS Specialist will be accountable for establishing EHS Requirements, practices, policies, procedures and standards for the customer. This position supports both the Kankakee, IL and Hopewell VA production facilities.
The EHS Specialist will work closely with Operations to ensure the site is in compliance with all local, state, and federal Environmental, Health, and Safety Regulations, as well as with Responsible Care and PSM. This position reports to the Global Director ESG, Health, and Safety.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Establishing EHS Requirements, Practices, Policies, Procedures and Standards: Determine Applicability to Sites & Processes, Interpret Regulations, Interact with Regulatory Agencies, define auditing criteria for PSM checking. Assist in RC14001 management system creation and maintenance.
• Process Safety Leadership: Conduct Audits on PSM processes, and mentor leaders in PSM compliance, hazards, and risks – processes.
• You will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS management systems and programs in relation to PSM; the active promotion of PSM awareness; the collection, reporting, and analysis of key PSM performance indicators; and ensuring appropriate PSM training is provided to all site employees and documented.
• Enforcement or Agency Interaction: Mitigate the effects of new regulations and manage enforcement with the agencies.
• Safe Process Design: Help Engineering Group establish Safe Design Criteria Based on Process Safety Concepts and Process Safety Principles, determine applicability of concepts and principles, Conduct Process Safety Risk Evaluations and conduct Process Safety Hazard Assessments
• Process Safety Management / Risk Management Planning: Maintain Corp Program and assist in development and Maintain Employee Participation Plan (PSM)
• Process Hazard Analyses: Facilitate PHAs and export action items for tracking in database system, compile information and participate in PHAs, and manage PHA files.
• Maintain Accident Incident Management System (AIMS) and HCL Notes Databases, participate in incident investigation – Especially PSI’s, review and approve AIMS and compile site metrics from AIMS data. Performs Root Cause Analyses (RCAs).
• Coordinates with ERT and EHS team members to ensure appropriate emergency response plans are in place for expected process safety scenarios.
• Responsible for generation of process safety metrics & trends & presentation at relevant forums with guidance from Global Director ESG, Health, and Safety.
• Mentor, coach, provide guidance and direction, and counsel between multiple departments and personnel across organization on Safety, safety management and risk management.
• Assists in completion of periodic Self Assessments & audits of the EHS Management System
• Performs New Hire Orientation to New Hires regarding EHS.
• Management of Change (MOC): - Where Notes is used; Conduct technical reviews, review and approve MOC.
• Field experience in the areas of Hazard Communication, Electrical safety, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fall Protection, LOTO, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Cranes & Hoists, Incident Investigation, and Safety Training.
• Participate in Project Reviews (including Pre-Start-up Reviews.
• Assist in radiation Safety Program
• Contractor Safety: Develop and maintain Site Contractor Procedure that includes selection/qualification and training.
• Safe Work Permitting Processes (i.e., confined space, lock, tag & try, line breaking, hot work, electrical safe work, excavation): Maintain Site Procedure, Training Content Development and train-the-trainer, Provide Training according to responsibility (procedures in all four programs), Annual Program Review, and Maintain Appropriate Records
• OSIH or Regulatory reporting.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
• Required: bachelor’s degree in engineering, Chemistry, or related field
• Preferred: masters’ degree in engineering, chemistry, or related field ; post graduate qualification in process safety
• 5-7+ years of industry experience (preferably chemical manufacturing)
• Knowledgeable of all process safety, occupational safety, environmental, and security regulations at the national, state, and local level
• Knowledge of the recognition, evaluation and control of hazards in a chemical industrial environment.
• Understanding of safety regulatory requirements, specifically OSHA/NFPA standards.
• Prior experience with regulatory agencies preferred.
• Prior process hazard analysis leadership preferred.
• Knowledge of safety by design principles preferred.
• Responsible Care 14001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or other EHS management systems experience preferred.
• Proficiency in MS applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, MS Teams, Sharepoint)
• Highly proactive, solid/unbiased judgment and decision-making abilities.
• Self-Directed & demonstrated efficient work methods, problem solving skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a very fast-paced work environment.
• Good written, oral communication and interpersonal skills

• Travel: Up to 10% (+/-)
• Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
