Medical Interpreting

The English/Spanish Interpreter performs medical and general interpreting duties for patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team in adherence to the National Standards of Practice (NCIHC). Responsibilities encompass interpreting during consultations, diagnostic testing, medical procedures, and the consent process. The interpreter also clarifies organizational policies related to visiting hours, parking, and visitor amenities. Ensuring effective communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers is paramount.

Additionally, the interpreter assesses and monitors patients’ comprehension of conveyed information, serving as a cultural mediator. Accurate and comprehensive documentation of interpretation encounters, including location, duration, and purpose, is diligently maintained in accordance with department standards. The interpreter also records instances of patient refusal of interpreting services.

Furthermore, meticulous records of productivity, work volumes, and interpreting requests are maintained. Active participation in staff meetings and mandatory in-service sessions is a crucial aspect of the role. The interpreter exercises sound judgment in prioritizing multiple requests and consistently upholds the Loyola University Health System mission.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Completion of high school education or equivalent required.

Additional college education preferred.

Minimum of two years of professional interpreter experience in a medical setting.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE :

Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially, both receptive and expressive, using medical terminology as appropriate.

Ability to speak, read, and write proficiently in both English and the target language. Must be able to achieve a rating of Advanced/High on the ACTFL testing scale, or equivalent.

Ability to work within an interdisciplinary, team environment.

Flexibility in response to changes in service provision demands.

Knowledgeable about the issues of cultural competency and healthcare disparities. Adaptable and sensitive in cross-cultural situations.

Excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills.
