Job Summary
Under the direction of a radiologist, performs ultrasound examinations at atechnical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety oftechnical imaging procedures that require independent judgment, appropriatetechnical skills in ultrasonography, and a commitment to patientsafety, all of which are considered requisite professional characteristicsfor individuals assuming the position as a sonographer.
Essential Functions:
Performs high quality US imaging studies by selecting specific softwareparameters that will produce a quality image for use by radiologists in theirdetermination of a diagnosis. Lack of negative complaints from radiologistsabout inadequately performed US examinations indicates the standard has beenexceeded. More than 3 complaints per year about image quality indicate failureto meet the standard. (10%)Operates US equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape,and composition of blood, organs, tissues, and bodily masses such asfluid accumulations. Observes equipment monitor during imaging scan to ensurethat the image produced is of diagnostic quality, making adjustments to theequipment as required. Selects appropriate equipment settings and adjustspatient positions to obtain the best sites and angles. Lack of incidentsand/or complaints indicates exceeds standard performance. More than 3complaints per year regarding image quality indicates failure to meetstandard.Operates, on a day-to-day basis, PACS applications to include: archivingactivities; image auto-routing and pre-fetching tasks; image qualityassurance; and other related activities. Lack of incidents and/orcomplaints about PACS user interface activities indicates exceeds standardperformance. More than 2 complaints per quarter about image managementindicate failure to meet standard. (10%)Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by followingappropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers.Transports patients to and from the Department of Radiology, as needed, toprevent patient flow delays. Lack of complaints indicates exceeds standardperformance. More than 3 complaints per year indicate failure to meetstandard.Prepares patient for an ultrasound study by explaining the study,transferring this individual to the examination table, applying gel, andpositioning the patient appropriately for the US study. (10%)Uses Radiology Information System (RIS) system to input patientexamination data and to place patient orders (as appropriate). Less than 2incidents of incomplete work per month indicates exceeds standard. More than 4incidents per month indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)Verifies the physician order and relevant patient's history in the medicalchart. Prior to performance of an US examination, consults with the relevantradiologist to obtain a written imaging study protocol. Lack of complaintsand/or incidents regarding incorrect US imaging protocols indicates exceedsstandard. More than 3 complaint/incidences per year indicate failure to meetstandard. (10%)The sonographer scans all relevant clinical information into the PACS,assigns prioritization box for the radiologists' work list, and thentransmits current (and comparison images, when applicable) to the PACS.These activities must be completed immediately following examinationcompletion, not to exceed 1 hour. (5%)Documents, as appropriate, all pertinent information on clinicalquestionnaires (e.g., interim care form). This standard cannot beexceeded. (5%Assists in the main enance of department inventory by ordering, stocking,and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized whenperforming US examinations. Consistent availability of requisite US medicalsupplies indicate exceeds standard. More than 3 incidents of supplyunavailability indicate failure to meet standard. (5%)Maintains imaging and processing equipment by performing scheduled cleaningsand tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, asappropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff ofequipment malfunctions. (5%)Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping downexamination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, andwashing/disinfecting US equipment. The standard cannot be exceeded. (5%)Attends and participates in departmental huddles, general intradepartmentalmeetings, and Radiology's inservices. Attendance at more than 90% ofscheduled staff meetings indicates exceeds standard performance. Attendance atless than 50% of the meetings indicates failure to meet standard. (5%)Education:
