Applicants must have a minimum of three (3) months ofexperience in the production/harvesting of sod, including the operationand maintenance of specialized sod production and harvesting machinery.To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, theworker must, after a 10 day conditioning period, move an average of atleast 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-foot sections of4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions. Worker will berequired to perform a variety of duties related to the production ofturf grass. The majority of the work activities during the overallcontract period, however, will be related to general farmwork/irrigation/crop production. Will apply specific horticulturaltechniques as instructed by the employer when carrying out the followingresponsibilities: prepare fields/plant/spray/weed and irrigateplants/shrubs/trees; sow seed and plant cuttings; recognize diseaseand/or nutrient/moisture requirements by plant texture/development orsoil condition; observe general condition of plants and apply theappropriate care; maintain and repair structures/grounds; repairpallets; sow grass seed and plant plugs of sod and cut/roll/stack/loadand unload sod; mow/tend sod/turf grass; harvest turf grass sod;trap/poison pests; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs onequipment (check oil/water and lubricate). Irrigation duties willinclude the following: Hand lines: connect pipes; check alignment ofpipe and adjust for proper water distribution; attach lines to watersupply; turn on pump; turn valves to start flow of water; disassemblelines and carry pipes across fields at specified intervals; move pipesthrough freshly irrigated crops and/or plowed fields where mud may bedeep at times; lift and carry pipe sections weighing approximately 40pounds on a sustained basis. Wheel lines: start gasoline engines andoperate controls to move lines across fields at specified intervals.Other Irrigation Duties: remove pipes/wheel lines from storage and layout/place in predetermined patterns in fields; lubricate, adjust, repairand replace parts such as sprinkler heads and drive chains using handtools; observe revolving sprinklers and adjust to ensure properoperation and uniform distribution of water; disassemble, service andstore pipes/mainlines/wheel lines after irrigation season.
The worker may be offered work seven days a week, as farm work must beperformed seven days a week. The worker will be required, however, towork the minimum number of 48 hours. The worker may be offered more thanthe specified hours per day, but is only required to work the hoursspecified. The worker may be requested, but will not be required, towork on his/her Sabbath and/or on Federal holidays. Work hours may varyand there may be periods when little or no work will be available due toweather, time of year, and the requirements of the cropping program.
Instruction, training, and general supervision will be provided by thefarm operator or a designated employee. However, the worker must performrequired duties without close supervision and listen to, understand, andfollow simple instructions of the employer or supervisor. The workerwill be required to return worn out tools, supplies, and equipmentbefore new ones will be provided. Most duties are performed out of doorsand entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain, and other environmentalconditions common in fields, including mosquitoes during certainseasons. The worker must crouch, bend, and lift and carry items weighingup to 100 pounds in the course of performing required activities.
