Job Purpose:
To support the Materials team with the inbound and outbound material and all aspects of shipping and receiving and
keeping accurate records.
A shipping/receiving assistant typically works in a warehouse environment and is responsible for tracking inventory
levels, handling all aspects of shipping and receiving, and keeping accurate records. On the shipping side, an assistant
will package items, print labels, weigh packages and determine appropriate postage. As receiving assistant, they are
responsible for comparing bills of lading against actual merchandise received, inspecting for damaged goods and,
once approved, distributing merchandise to the correct departments

Education / Training:
• Skill level I – Combination of 2+ years' experience in inventory control or education;
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
• Able to work irregular or extended hours, including weekends and nights as neede

Key Job Elements:
• Determines method of shipment and prepares bills, invoices and other shipping documents;
• Receives merchandise - checks and signs delivery slips, and assists with unloading as necessary;
• Inspects and verifies incoming goods against invoices or other documents, records shortages and rejects
damaged goods;
• Accepts or returns merchandise according to established company procedures. Calculates prices according
to guidelines, and affixes bar codes, prices, and security tags as necessary;
• Organizes distribution and shipping of merchandise. Makes necessary verifications against documents,
unpacks and routes goods to appropriate storage areas. Handles customer pick-ups;
• May operate forklift, hand truck or other equipment to load, unload, transport and store goods;
• Maintains internal record-keeping systems;
• Contacts resource people for various information. Contacts transport companies and suppliers in order to
expedite, trace or return merchandise that does not conform to specifications or purchase orders;
• Assembles containers and crates, packs goods to be shipped and prepares identifying information and
shipping instructions;
• Knows safe storage and handling procedures for various chemicals and materials;
• Knows proper shipping procedures for transportation of dangerous goods;
• Takes inventory, maintains storage area, organizes and places stock on shelves. Ensures area is secure at all
times.
Essential and Physical Activities Functions
• Strength – Able to lift 50 pounds without restrictions;
• Motion – Employee will be sitting, standing, bending, reaching;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Office workers may spend long period of time in front of computer screen.
Employees may be exposed to loud noises and machinery. Must be capable of reading labels;
• Work Environment – The employee spends his/her time indoors & outdoors. Outdoors could be in snow,
rain, hot vs. cold, etc. Inside – Hot vs. Cold. Also work with chemicals and/or hazardous material;
• Emotional Demands – Interpret data, correct input and paperwork required, deal with production
supervisors looking for parts. Must show patience;
• Safety – Outside shipping office, Hard hat, Metatarsal Safety Boots, Safety Glasses. Does require occasional
use of rolling/moving equipment in tight spaces. This is a safety Sensitive positions.
Qualifications and Experience:
Preferred Skills
• Advanced Windows Operating Systems experience;
• Must be capable of operating fork truck and similar equipment;
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel);
• Exemplary mathematical and analytical skills.
