The SET Pre-Major and SET Direct Admit Advisor in the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) provides guidance and support to help students make informed decisions about their academic and career paths. The SET Pre-major and SET Direct Admit Advisor will assist current UW Tacoma pre-major students and SET Direct students in selecting their SET major, setting goals, planning their coursework, and navigating challenges, ultimately fostering a successful comprehensive student experience. This position reports to the Lead Academic Advisor.
Working as the SET Pre-major and SET Direct Advisor offers a rewarding opportunity to assist students in their educational journey, facilitate their transition to a program major in one of our high in demand undergraduate STEM programs, and contribute to the growth and success of the institution.

Are technologically savvy. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITLIES Student Counseling and Guidance - 50%
Provide personalized advising sessions to prospective SET students enrolled at UW Tacoma, either in person, over the phone, or through virtual platforms, to understand their educational aspirations and career goals.
Provide personalized advising sessions to SET Direct Admits either in person, over the phone, or through virtual platforms, to understand their educational aspirations and career goals.
Offer detailed information about academic programs, courses, prerequisites, and potential career paths associated with each program.
Assess students' academic backgrounds and qualifications to determine their eligibility for various programs and suggest suitable alternatives if necessary.
Address concerns, answer inquiries, and clarify doubts related to the major admissions process, academic offerings, campus life, financial aid, and other relevant matters.Application Assistance - 20%
Assist students in completing their supplemental major application accurately and ensure all required documents are submitted on time.
Review SET application materials to ensure they meet SET standards and guidelines.
Collaborate with other departments, particularly Admissions, Financial Aid and University Academic Advising, to verify the completeness of applications and resolve any issues that may arise during the application process.
Serve as a SET Direct Admissions review committee member.Outreach, Collaboration and Recruitment - 10%
Participate in various on campus recruitment events, such as campus major fairs, Orientation, major information sessions, classroom visits, and campus tours, to promote the School of Engineering and Technology and attract pre-major students into our programs.
Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to develop informative materials, including brochures, flyers, and online content relevant for pre-major students interested in a SET major.
Collaborate with the other departments such as the admissions office, registrar’s office, and undergraduate advising office, to ensure a successful transition into one of SET’s undergraduate programs.
Coordinate outreach and recruitment activities with Enrollment Services.Program Evaluation and Recommendations - 5%
Stay up-to-date with changes in academic programs, admission requirements, and any other relevant policies to provide accurate information to prospective students.
Evaluate students' academic backgrounds and interests to recommend suitable programs that align with their goals and strengths.Data Management - 5%
Maintain accurate and confidential records of all interactions with pre-major students, including advising sessions and communication details.
Compile and analyze data related to enrollment trends, applicant demographics, and other relevant metrics to support strategic decision-making.Continuous Professional Development - 5%
Attend training sessions, workshops, and conferences to enhance advising skills, stay updated on industry trends, and share best practices with colleagues.Supervise Student Staff - 5%
May supervise SET student employees. Includes hiring, training, and daily supervision.
Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of progressively responsible experience in higher education advising, recruitment, or admissions.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and faculty, including non-native English speakers, using excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects with precision and accuracy.
Knowledge of higher education policies, admission processes, and academic programs.
The ability to handle sensitive situations with diplomacy and confidentiality.
Self-motivated and uses available resources to solve problems and answer inquiries.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Familiarity with relevant software and tools for managing student data and communication.
Empathetic and patient approach to guide students through the decision-making process.
Commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree in education, counseling, business or related field.
Understanding of the student lifecycle.
