The SVP, Product will be responsible for leading the company product strategy, pricing, and product and packaging development staff. This person will also be a member of the company’s executive leadership team. They will work very closely with our Sourcing, Marketing and Commercial teams to help make the company’s product vision a reality.
Specific responsibilities will include:
Overall:
Building and leading a product team overseeing the launch calendar, product marketing, product assortments, pricing, sustainability initiatives, product and packaging development.
Being a core member of the company’s executive leadership team, helping set the overall strategy and direction of the company, with a specific focus on product.
Being a role model of our company’s values and priorities.
Product Strategy
Work closely with CEO/Founder and Chief Marketing Officer to build and update a product strategy that realizes the Founder’s brand vision with specific playbooks by category.
Establish a 3-year rolling launch calendar and product lifecycle roadmap, outlining new product launches, product updates, extensions, and discontinuations.
Guide the team to create product design briefs based off the product strategy – including each product’s target consumer, point of difference, key attributes, target price/COGS/margin, competitive benchmarking and positioning within market.
Make strategic trade-offs around breadth and depth of assortment.
Partner with Operations and Commercial teams on exit strategies for reformulated/discontinued products to avoid write-offs and markdowns.
Product Development
Manage the product team as they work with internal and external partners to design/develop/(re-)formulate products based off product briefs.
Help bring the Founder’s product ideas to life.
Partner with our Sourcing and Logistics teams to identify and select manufacturers and suppliers, with a focus toward finding high quality, reliable partners while also optimizing our supply chain footprint and lead times.
Partner with our Regulatory teams to ensure all new and existing products adhere to and comply with all relevant regulations, both in the United States as well as in international markets.
Partner with, and educate, our Marketing and Commercial teams on new product launches.
Partner with our Marketing team on collaborations (both within and outside of the cosmetics space).
Ensure the company is a leader in innovative, cruelty-free and performance-driven formulas.
Packaging & Sustainability
Manage the team to develop/update our packaging strategy and design guide with the goal of maintaining the company’s leadership position in highly functional and sustainable packaging, with an immediately recognizable aesthetic.
Partner with our Sourcing and Logistics teams to identify packaging suppliers with an aim to optimize our packaging supply chain over time.
Work with our Sourcing and Regulatory teams to ensure all packaging is compliant with domestic and international standards.
Work with our CEO/Founder and CMO to set the company’s sustainability commitments and lead the product team to design/reformulate/repackage our products to realize those commitments.
Ensure the company is a leader in innovative and sustainable packaging.
Pricing
Manage the pricing function – both domestically and internationally.
Set target prices for all products based on target margin, competitive benchmarking, and range architecture/relationship to other products.
Work with Commercial team to set international price indexes, and liaise with rest of the organization to ensure that price adjustments are clearly communicated and updated in an organized manner in all markets.
Qualifications
At least 15 years of product development experience in cruelty-free color cosmetics; experience with skincare and/or fragrance product development is also an attribute.
Experience managing product design and development functions within a product organization.
Proven track record and demonstrable examples of bringing new product ideas to life.
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or science preferred.
Strong relationships with premium cosmetic and packaging manufacturers and suppliers.
Can partner well with key stakeholders including Operations, Regulatory, Marketing, Commercial and Finance.
Must be able to work from Corporate Office at least 60% of the time.
Bold and innovative – not content with being a follower.
Good communicator – can articulate a vision and strategy to their own team and to the broader company.
Organized - can juggle multiple timelines across multiple seasons of product development.
Competitive and wants to win!
The expected base salary range for this position is $225,000 to $275,000. The exact base salary is determined by various factors including experience, skills, education, geographic location, and budget.
This position is also eligible for participation in the company discretionary bonus plan, based on personal performance and company results.
