About Senior UX Engineer

The Windows + Web Experiences UX Engineering team is looking for a Senior UX Engineer to help us build the future of web experiences at Microsoft. Our team partners and collaborates closely with the Fluent Design System effort, delivering production code to support our engineering partners such as Bing, Edge, Microsoft News, Microsoft Shopping, Microsoft Ads, and Windows.

  About You

The candidate has experience building design systems and is a proactive problem-solver with a passion for getting the details right. They understand that the backbone of creating excellent, and accessible web experiences are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript - the fundamental building blocks of the web. They know these technologies down to the core - their strengths and their weaknesses. Their deep understanding of these technologies allows them to make informed architectural decisions and appropriate trade-offs when necessary.

  Our Culture

Microsoft’s mission is to ‘empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more’. The UX Engineering team for Windows + Web Experiences works to bring this mission to life for our customers. Our team works across multiple products and organizations while collaborating with designers, product managers, and engineers to craft meaningful, relevant, and delightful product experiences. Microsoft has a long history of some of the best software engineering work in the world, and a growing track record of excellent design as well, but where the two disciplines meet is often what separates the merely adequate from the transcendent.

As a team, we aim to adopt open web-standards based approaches wherever possible. We are standards-obsessed because we are customer obsessed. We know that leveraging web standards maximizes performance, interoperability, consistency, and stability. It provides forward-compatibility, extensibility, and improved cross-organization and customer collaboration. Our approach to building excellent web experiences starts with leveraging the best of what the browser has to offer and extending from there.

We challenge ourselves to always live the Microsoft philosophies around inclusive culture and growth mindsets. We value learning, innovation, and collaboration. We contribute to each other’s work to make it better. We celebrate our wins and learn and grow from our mistakes.

If you’re looking for a change and wanting to make an impact – we invite you to join us in our mission and vision to build the future of UX for Microsoft.

  A day in the life

Partner with our Design System team to help ensure design excellence in our process and workflows

Turn designs into accessible, performant, and shippable production code while partnering and iterating to make them delightful our users

Offer constructive feedback in the design and engineering process followed by creative and effective solutions

Communicate to stakeholders when technology constraints require design or engineering compromises

Follow best practices and provide code review feedback to your peers

Collaborate with others to bring ideas to life and create prototypes that convey experience intentions when static comps can’t tell the whole story

Communicate clearly and concisely with stakeholders

Partner and collaborate with our Fluent UI Design and Engineering counterparts

  Responsibilities

Other success factors in our dynamic environment:

Thoughtfulness—You’re thoughtful and deliberate in your choices and able to articulate that on the fly across a cross-functional team, and occasionally, conflicting priorities and objectives.

Bigger picture – Understands how to prevent short-term work from blocking long-term goals. Need to be able to move very fast without coding/designing in a way that inhibits our future needs or others’ efforts.

Business intelligence + persuasion skills—You’ve got the social intelligence and business savvy to understand (or explain) what needs to be changed, prioritized, and why. You use criticism to spur insightful conversations instead of be defensive or shut down.

A translator of tradeoffs—There’s no perfect design or implementation, and often no perfect answer. You’re able to create different options and translate the tradeoffs between them in the context of business impact.

A facilitator—You know how to collaborate with others and let them put their concerns on the table.

Self-awareness – You pay attention to how you impact team health and culture, as well as your personal well-being. We value folks who care about others, and who make sure to take time to care for themselves.
