Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. https://www.stsci.edu/what-we-do. The Data Management Division is hiring a Senior Science Software Engineer in the Science Calibration Software Branch (SCSB ) to work on the calibration pipelines supporting NASA's flagship missions. You will build calibration software capable of precise reductions of astronomical observations and interact with astronomers to deliver innovative solutions to solve cutting-edge astronomical problems.
This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV). This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
Responsibilities for this position include:
Design, develop and support calibration software
Collaborate with developers and scientists at STScI on requirements and software testing
Write documentation
Provide pipeline support to the community
Qualifications:
Proficient in Python. You will be working mostly in Python though experience with C/C++ is beneficial
Experience with astronomical data reduction and analysis (IR experience is a plus)
Experience with a distributed version control system, like GIT, in a team environment
Familiarity with Python testing tools
Familiarity with Python scientific libraries
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy or Physics or a comparable degree. An advanced degree in Astronomy is preferred. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.
The salary range for this position is between $115k - $135k. Substitution of additional relevant education and/or experience for stated qualifications may be considered. Compensation is commensurate with education, skills and experience. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.
