Public Works Department
This is highly skilled professional level work in the field of surveyingand mapping. Candidate selected for this position will performtechnical, administrative and supervisory responsibilities and work withminimal supervision. Work will involve professional contact with otherCity staff, consultants, public utilities, construction contractors, thegeneral public, stakeholder groups, various Boards and Committees, theCity Council and will work to support the Chief Surveyor and the Survey,GIS and Archives Manager. This employee works under the direction of theChief Surveyor, or other appropriate Division Head or designee; workwill be performed in this class with a high degree of professionaljudgment; supervises technical and professional level employees andcontract personnel. Primary responsibilities will be to prepare andsupervise the creation of plans and data for municipal projects such asbut not limited to boundary surveys, storm water and sanitary sewerprojects, transportation projects, right-of-way projects, mappingprojects which involve the application of surveying and mappingtechniques; facilitates communication and coordination by and betweengroups, project managers, and consultant surveyors; may overseesresearch and production work of others; prepares and administersconsultant contracts for services provided to; prepares reports, andcompiles data; may review City, State or Federal policies andlegislation related to engineering and surveying and makes appropriaterecommendations; prepares technical documentation and may makepresentations for City Council, Planning Board, Boards & Committees andcivic or neighborhood organizations as required by assigned work; mayact as survey crew chief; prepares scope and cost estimates; preparesbudget estimates and equipment needs for municipal projects, administersprojects and portions of operating and funding program budgets relatedto assigned projects and personnel; collects, analyzes, and documentsdata and writes reports; carries out various tasks related to theadministration of various City ordinances performs related engineeringoffice and field work.
Requirements: Graduation from a four-year college or university;progressively responsible and demonstrated experience in the surveyingand engineering field and considerable experience and knowledge of theprinciples and practices of surveying, mapping, CAD, and engineering;considerable knowledge and experience with survey instruments,engineering and information management equipment and software andpresent day technology and methods; proficiency in use of computers andother electronic devices and experience in Microsoft Office software,AutoCAD, Civil 3D, mapping software and asset management tools; abilityto manage, plan and supervise the work of survey and mappingprofessionals, ability to implement and administer personnel policiesestablished by the City; ability to express ideas and understandinstructions effectively, orally and in writing; considerable knowledgeof graphics and drafting practice; ability to withstand exposure tovaried climatic conditions and maneuver over uneven terrain; ability toclimb stairs and access remote facilities above and below ground;ability to present project information, schedules and work detail to adiverse audience; ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with other employees, regulatory agencies, publicutilities and to deal with public service issues in a courteous andtactful manner; ability to succeed in a deadline-driven environment andwillingness to work long hours as required.
Necessary Special Requirements: Valid Maine Class C drivers license andmust have and maintai good driving record; registration as a LicensedProfessional Land Surveyor or ability to gain registration in the Stateof Maine within one (1) year. Offers of employment are contingent uponthe completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
Pro-Tech Union position - Grade 8 Starting salary range\$1,157.25-\$1,465.88/weekly, based on relevant years of experience.
