Position Description:
The Utilities Lead role is a member of the Engineering Tech Center organization responsible for ensuring the safe and economically effective delivery of compliant manufacturing, research, and administrative facilities for Lilly worldwide.
Depending on the candidate's background, this position will focus on delivering design expertise for mechanical and utilities systems.
The Utilities Lead will provide technical oversight of the translation by contractors of those requirements into design solutions and the delivery of functional and qualified assets based on the designs.
The position requires cross functional interaction with both internal (Lilly) and external (contractor) groups.
Key Objectives/Deliverables:
Establish the Engineering Requirements for the mechanical and unit operation systems of capital projects.
Perform evaluations and design guidance on mechanical systems that may include HVAC systems, utility systems (air, steam, water, glycol, etc.), waste treatment and disposal systems, as well as unit operations supporting drug substance, drug product manufacturing.
Ensure there is alignment between stakeholders and functional unit strategies, policies, and standards. Ensure the business needs, functional unit strategies, policies, standards, and product needs are translated into performance criteria.
Review engineering and design work by contractors and the submittals from suppliers and contractors against the engineering requirements including Lilly Global Quality Standards, Global Engineering Standards, and Engineering Master Specifications.
Assume responsibility to own and maintain assigned Engineering functional standards, guidance documents, best practices, and master specifications including the review of exception requests and periodic reviews with internal (Lilly) groups and selected vendors/contractors to ensure Lilly specifies economically efficient designs.
Ensures Lilly Engineering is effectively engaged at the appropriate level in reviewing the project designs for the projects assigned. Participates in the Global Facility Delivery PDRI processes as requested.
Ensure connection to key external policy makers, practitioners, and influencers in mechanical and electrical disciplines are made and kept up to date.
Communicate the impact of key external marketplace changes as they occur.
Own and facilitate communities of practice in the mechanical, electrical functions across Lilly as a whole. Facilitate communication between practicing engineers in these fields to promote best-practice sharing where applicable.
Minimum Requirements:
BS in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical strongly preferred) typically found in pharmaceutical manufacturing
Minimum of 5 years manufacturing and/or project delivery experience
Additional Preferences:
Familiarity with financial concepts (e.g. NPV, COPs).
Understanding of decision science concepts and can provide structure to decision making.
Demonstrated familiarity with understanding and application of mechanical code, mechanical system specifications, and applications of mechanical design elements
Demonstrated understanding of the design processes employed by engineering and architectural firms.
Must possess strong business acumen, with an awareness of the life cycle cost evaluation processes as they apply to equipment and systems.
Must be able to frame complex decisions/analyses.
Must have demonstrated good written and verbal communications for the projects assigned skills.
Must have the ability to lead groups including internal and external resources to provide profile and study content.
Must be organized, able to develop a plan for design, and able to execute the plan hitting agreed-to target dates. Must be able to set own priorities.
Proven flexibility in adapting and adjusting to changes in working practices and a willingness to take on different roles as required by the needs of the Engineering Tech Center.
Ability to work with diverse perspectives and to identity and resolve issues with minimal direction.
Demonstrated knowledge of non-US codes and standards applicable to mechanical systems and components relevant to Lilly sites.
