  What You’ll Get to Do

  CACI is looking for a talented Senior Paralegal professional to support the Department of Justice, Tax Division’s mission. Responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services. The work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of paralegal activities in conjunction with knowledge of paralegal skills and an ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned AUSAs.

  Frequent, out-of-state travel is required.

  Cases supported will include civil matters in various stages of Investigation, Discovery, Deposition or Trial Prep/Trial. Issues include, but are not limited to, Conservation Easement, Injunction, Tax Preparer/Promoter, Bankruptcy, Shelters, Employment, etc. Discovery supported may be as small as a folder of paper handled manually up to millions of records processed and hosted in databases. Main software used and supported include Relativity, E-Capture, IPRO View, IPRO Eclipse SE, CaseMap Suite, Adobe Creative Suite; however, new software to automate litigation support (i.e. ABBYY Flexicapture, TextIQ/PrivIQ, Veritone, etc.) are tested annually and some useful tools will become fully used in everyday litigation.

  Senior Paralegals provide a variety of paralegal services to AUSA staff.

  Typical assignments include, but are not limited to, following established guidelines, gathers, prepares, summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in preparation of opinions, briefs and other legal documents; summarizes depositions and other transcripts; maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks and controls exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial. Assists attorneys in courtroom; prepares exhibit cross-references. Screens documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria. Performs initial compilation of documents for FOIA or production requests, subject to review by superiors and trial staff.

  Provides assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists. Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims’ rights and services responsibilities. Notifies appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues. Using original and online legal resources, verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material. Develops tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format. Lists cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs. Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants.

  Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide

  range of office software applications. For example, assignments may include

  integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by

  database applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic

  spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text.

  Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which may be

  incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations. Ensures

  proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

  Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation

  and courtroom presentations. Utilizes various software applications and

  graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. Prepares documents,

  charts, and visual materials for use in trials. Provides technical support e.g.,

  enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking

  exhibits.

  Works with ALS (primarily Case Managers) to make sure the case has the necessary technology and is properly addressing E-Discovery;

  Compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents; Summarizes depositions and other transcripts; maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery); indexes, tracks and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial. Prepares exhibit cross-references;

  Assists attorneys in courtroom; Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.

  Power User of Adobe, MS Word and MS Excel

  Power User of Ipro View, Ipro Eclipse SE and Relativity.

  Frequent, out-of-state travel is required.

  You’ll Bring These Qualifications

  Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study. Only the Contracting Officer can approve a waiver of the education requirements. At least two years of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful. At least one year of experience in automated litigation support. Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources. Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
