The successful candidate for this position in Underwriting, will be required to examine, review, evaluate, classify, and rate applicants to determine compliance with company guidelines, underwriting criteria, philosophy, and policies and procedures. Havinga working knowledge of medical terminology and awareness of how various medical impairments interact and effect individual mortality and morbidity risk is critical in this role. Adept ability to evaluate an applicant's overall risk profile to make a decision recommendation, not open-ended requests for insight. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and productivity levels established by management. Provide leadership to lower-level underwriters in their file review and underwriting in accordance with established protocols and underwriting criteria. Underwritingworks closely with General Office personnel and may, at times, speak directly with agents. Consequently, having strong communication and customer service skills are expected.
Responsibilities
Follow established protocols, underwriting guidelines, and procedures to analyze risk, ensuring decisions are consistent with corporate guidelines while maintaining a strong working knowledge of our administrative systems and productivity level established by management.
Associate must have a working knowledge of medical terminology and awareness of how various medical impairments interact and effect individual mortality and morbidity risk.
Evaluate insurance applications with a focus on quality, timeliness, and productivity to determine whether an application should be approved, declined, or if additional information is required to evaluate risk when appropriate.
Accurately and efficiently classify the mortality and morbidity risk for proposed insureds at the appropriate rate class based on both medical and non-medical information including quickly but carefully reading, analyzing, and interpreting medical history from phone and in-person assessments, cognitive test scores, medical records, MIB, prescription profile results,motor vehicle reports and avocations,and financial requirements.
Demonstrate knowledge to underwrite multiple products accurately within the protocols specified for each product.
Review and evaluate LTC Solutions applications and supporting documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Review and respond to appealed decisions, reinstatements, and plan change requests.
Answer inquiries regarding eligibility, policies, underwriting guidelines, and compliance procedures.
Demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills both internally and externally, that includes use of all systems and communication within systems, appropriate wording of letters, professional verbal communication with team members, Agents, Clients, and Field force.
Prepare responses to special circumstance letters to applicants, agents, and medical professionals.
Complete any special projects assigned by management.
Able to produce high volumes of work with quality results.
Author messages to Agents and Case Management staff regarding applicant status, additional requirements needed, input errors and required corrections, as well as the final underwriting decision.
Experience
Understanding of risk factors relating to morbidity and mortality risk management
Medical Terminology or medical evaluation
Strong skills in communication both oral and written
Proficient PC Skills
Time Management Skills
Strong organizational skills and good math aptitude
Ability to perform in high stress environment
Ability to work independently on multi-projects.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree Preferred, BS, RN or equivalent insurance industry experience.
Minimum of 5 years Life or LTC underwriting experience including working with Agents
Acceptable Alternatives are disability or health insurance underwriting experience
