General Description
This supervisory position is assigned to the Mayor's Office, Office of Neighborhood Safety/Advance Peace whose primary objective is to reduce local gun violence within a culturally competent and trauma-responsive framework. The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing day-to-day management and supervision of employees responsible for providing street outreach, tailored engagement, services referral, and mediation of street-level conflicts that could elevate to gun violence. The incumbent in this title is supervised by the Coordinator of the Office of Neighborhood Safety and performs related work as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
Typical Work Activities
Develops, implements, and refines protocols for addressing and reducing community conflict associated with violence;
Oversees the mediation efforts of high-level street conflicts, through the referral and guidance of selected residents through the processes of social, behavioral, educational, employment, and other various support services, etc.;
Coordinates case management and maintains constant community presence by conducting daily outreach to individuals involved in gun-related or other conflicts, their friends, associates, and families; shares information about available services and resources;
Conducts meetings with the team on a daily/weekly basis to share contacts, outcomes and ensure that all clients are being appropriately served;
Develops and ensures the maintenance of appropriate participant documentation, record keeping, and program assessment and refinement with special attention to confidentiality concerns;
Develops relationships for the purposes of referral with service delivery providers, particularly education, behavioral health and employment, and training agencies and resources;
Establishes relationships with community, faith-based and governmental organizations with interests in addressing violence and providing opportunities for those involved in violence;
Translates work related issues and material into understandable written and oral formats; communicates clearly, can compose and organize timely and informative weekly and monthly reports;
Ensures the follow-up on participants at specified intervals to ascertain programming status, challenges, outcomes, and opportunities in real-time;
Enforces City and Bureau safety policy.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or Equivalent; AND four (4) years of violence prevention/intervention (interruption) experience and/or community development (organizing/engagement) experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a current valid NYS Class D Operator’s license.
The license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
