About Senior Design Engineer, Civil

  Some of what you'll be doing:

  Applications will be reviewed regularly, and interviews may be conducted prior to the application close date.

  As Senior Design Engineer, you will work on complicated and non-standard projects with a high degree of technical complexity. You will lead project work teams of multiple disciplines and may be responsible for the overall design leadership, coordination with stakeholders and customers, responsible for overall design scopes, budgets, and schedules.

  You will serve at the technical specialist in the application of advanced concepts, principles, and methods. You will provide engineering support and technical knowledge to other Port Departments and the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA).

  You will provide coaching, mentoring, and training to engineers on how to successfully design and deliver projects.

  You will assist project and program managers in developing scope, design, and construction budgets, design, and construction schedules, permitting requirements, and design fee estimates including outside consultant services for multiple highly complex capital projects.

  You will establish project Work Plans based on project scope that serves as a service agreement between engineering and Project Management. You will develop a Basis of Design report based on project scope.

  You will coordinate and collaborate with the project and program managers to monitor the evolution of design to ensure target scope and budget are not exceeded.

  You will lead, manage, and supervise the design and QA/QC reviews through completion.

  You will review and provide professional license stamp on engineering bid documents, reports, and studies. You will lead the application for and obtain construction permits.

  You will monitor and manage in-house design and outside consultant budgets.

  You will provide technical review during construction phases of projects. You will review and respond to Contractor submittals, Requests for Information, and change orders.

  You will visit construction sites to observe progress, quality of construction, and resolve field issues. You will provide redesigns or additional details as needed when field conditions differ.

  Who you are:

  Experienced – You have ten (10) years of experience with all facets of design and construction, including leading teams in resolving complex design and construction issues. You also have four (4) years of increasing responsibility, engineering design staff supervision, including at least two (2) years with interdisciplinary teams.

  Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or closely related science field and have licensure as a Professional Engineer in Washington State.

  Desired – We hope you have a Master’s degree in engineering, or ten (10) years of experience in design, in addition to two (2) years of design project management. We also hope that you have experience in design and construction of marine and airport facilities.

  Knowledgeable – You have advanced theoretical and practical design knowledge or engineering and design principles for marine, airport, public works projects and commercial, and industrial facilities in demanding sites. This knowledge includes transportation, earthwork, drainage systems, water distribution and sanitary sewer systems You have knowledge of construction methods, processes, project scheduling, estimating, and budgeting. You have knowledge of city, state, and federal permit procedures, City of Seattle and Washington State adopted building codes, and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Civil3d.

  Leader – You have demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate, mentor, and develop staff members. You can persuade and negotiate with key individuals regarding critical and precedent setting issues.

  Multi tasker – You can work independently and oversee and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously while managing complex projects.

  Interpersonal – You’re able to interact with a wide variety or groups, both internal and external to the Port and NWSA as well as present technical analyses and recommendations to non-technical audiences.

  What else you need to know:

  Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.

  Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.

  Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management’s discretion with occasional exposure to all types of weather conditions during site visits and field work.

  Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.

  Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.

  Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.

  Security Requirements – You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.

  Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
