The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Software development - 80% The primary responsibility of this position will be to build an internal web-based platform for the management of scientific data and workflows. The IPD has ten Core Research Labs that specialize in various scientific areas related to protein science, such as protein production, bioassays, electron microscopy, and x-ray crystallography. Working with a small IT team locally at the IPD, the Senior Computer Specialist will build tools that integrate data generated by the Cores to streamline interactions and data exchange between the Cores and 200 scientists in faculty labs at the IPD. A further goal of this platform is to integrate with various laboratory instruments and their specialized software to provide secure access to external users.
Hardware and software maintenance - 20% The IPD operates an extensive on-premises computational infrastructure that is used for computation and data storage. Occasionally, the candidate for this position will help support the routine maintenance, build-out and operation of the on-premises high-performance computing cluster and various servers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, life sciences, or related field + 2 years or more experience in related field. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Deep familiarity with:
Development of publicly facing web services in PHP or Python.
Object oriented programming.
Web technologies and frameworks such as HTML/CSS/Bootstrap/Javascript.
Efficient use of SQL databases.In-depth understanding of:
Web development security principles.
Apache and Nginx web server environments.
Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems in an independent manner.Two to three years of experience with:
Integrated development environments and debugging tools.
Git version control and concurrent development by multiple parties.
Support of development- and production-level Linux systems, software and hardware.
Virtualization technologies (QEMU, Linux containers).
Working with large datasets (SQL databases and files). DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Background / training in life sciences highly desirable.
Experience writing technical documentation.
Linux system administration experience.
Good understanding of networking concepts to interface with various lab instruments.
Hardware troubleshooting experience.
Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies.
High attention to detail.
Ability to work as a part of a high-functioning and nimble team.
Self-motivated to tackle new challenges and propose solutions. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are relatively few physical discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, and the like.
General working hours are Monday through Friday, 9am-6pm; occasional after hours work may be required to accommodate business needs.
The position requires the ability to transport equipment along footpaths between multiple sites, and to lift equipment (50lb) to/from a rolling cart. The IPD has facilities in five locations on campus, 0.5 miles apart, as well as two data center locations, one on campus and one 15 miles away.
