DESCRIPTION
The Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications is currently seeking a part-time, unclassified Senior Administrative Intern to support the Department in preparing the City of Long Beach for natural and Human-caused hazards. This position will perform a variety of professional tasks in the fields of research, grant management, community outreach, and graphic design.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
The Department
The Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications consists of three bureaus: Disaster Preparedness, Administration and Grants, and Emergency Communications. The Department’s mission is to protect the lives and property of the community and first responders through comprehensive planning, training, and communication to ensure that daily requests for emergency services, as well as preparedness, response, and recovery from major emergencies and disasters is completed in an effective and efficient manner.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Support current projects for the department’s three bureaus.
Participate in community events to provide disaster preparedness materials and information to the community.
With oversight from a supervisor, manage social media and department campaigns,
Assist in managing the department webpage.
Based on experience, lead projects with oversight from a supervisor.
Help plan and design projects and make recommendations for improvement.
Perform research and analysis in support of the three bureaus.
Develop PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets for public presentations.
Create and design print and digital materials.
Attend disaster preparedness training and exercises.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
A student currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in a junior or senior standing or enrolled in graduate-level courses with a focus/emphasis on business administration, management, public administration, human resources, or a closely related field with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. OR
Recent graduation (less than 1 year of submitting application) from an undergraduate or graduate program from an accredited college or university with a focus/emphasis on business administration, management, public administration, human resources, or a closely related field with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Familiarity with Emergency Management practices;
Current course work or major in Emergency Management, Public Policy, Political Science, City Planning, or a related field; and
Experience with outreach and communications with the public.
Qualified Candidates Will Possess
Excellent organization, writing, and oral presentation skills.
Inquisitive and willingness to propose new ideas.
Ability to communicate ideas clearly, succinctly, and persuasively to diverse audiences in a written, verbal, or presentation format.
Proficient application of Microsoft Office software.
Ability and willingness to work on multiple projects concurrently under tight deadlines.
