  The University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Neurosurgery seeks a talented Science Communications Specialist (Medical Research & Scientific Publication Specialist). * The incumbent will produce and edit content for publications, training materials, exhibits and research, and consultations. The position will have the opportunity to work with some of the nation's leading Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Otolaryngologists, and Researchers to produce high-quality neuroscience illustrations and animations to support the academic mission of our department. The department aims to excel and innovate in clinical practice, science, and neurosurgery education. Exempt regular staff receive a generous paid leave package that includes over 4 weeks of vacation accrued each year, 15 paid holidays, 3 personal leave, unlimited accrual of sick time, and comprehensive health insurance; professional learning and development programs; tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any University System of Maryland school; and flexible work schedules and teleworking options (if applicable per job). /UMB is Ranked Among the Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes 2022 & 2023./ // PRIMARY DUTIES * Develops integrated communications and publications for the Department that are in synergy with the Department’s leadership team’s vision and voice for style and content to support the Department’s research initiatives. * Collaborate with leadership, research labs, and scholars to develop detailed medical and scientific communications, illustrations, and strategies, including design, illustration, writing, editing, crafting, and contributing to the enhancement of publications, essays, social media, patient stories, and external communications through multiple channels and audiences. * Develop effective medical and scientific communications and illustrations with respect to style, organization, structure, and breadth of subject matter using correct language and communications strategies and techniques. Prepares reports, abstracts, statements, presentations, and other communications that require a medical and scientific understanding of the subject material, context, and audience. Delivers creative and thought-provoking materials. * May contribute to other publication and communications projects, such as grant proposals, and newsletters. * Work closely with authors to create elegant, accurate visual content using the latest industry standards and technology to achieve higher visibility and faster publication. * Design, develop, and produce medical illustrations, animations, and written content in order to facilitate departmental educational projects. Interact with internal clients on a regular basis in order to facilitate the timely delivery of quality graphical material. * Build an archive of publications, illustrations, videos, and animations available to internal and external researchers and authors. * Meet with faculty and trainees in order to determine needs and timeframe, develop design concepts and communications strategies, and review work from design inception through the delivery of finished products. * Participate, as needed, in meetings and audio recordings with faculty to assist in the process of creating unique, technically accurate visual aids. * Produce content for faculty presentations. Coordinate with designers, writers, and multi-media staff on the image, animation, and audio needs. * Reviews and recommends new software and hardware requirements, and learns new approaches and technological solutions to improve performance. * Examine project requirements and identify/interface with the proper technical support and outside vendors needed to produce results. * Performs other duties as assigned. Education:Bachelor’s degree in fine or graphic arts, life science, healthcare, or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Experience:Two (2) years as a medical illustrator or working in scientific communications. Preferred Experience:Experience in conceptual graphics for both digital and print media for various medical/scientific areas, such as neuroscience or biomedical. Preferred Certification/Licensure:Board Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI). Other:Related experience may be substituted for education. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES * Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in the effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and a strategic vision. Instructional, training, and team-building skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation and change management.
