  Job Summary

  Under general supervision, performs enforcement and security work in City Parks and Riverwalk activities. Enforces all applicable laws and ordinances and provides information pertaining to park use, safety requirements, and points of interest. Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions, hostile people, and emergency situations. Exercises no supervision.

  Essential Job Functions

  Ensures the safety and protection of the users of the City's parks and recreational resource facilities, visitors of the Riverwalk, and the City's natural resources.

  Provides information and assistance to patrons and visitors pertaining to park usage and restrictions, safety requirements, general directions, and points of interest.

  Identifies and reports any safety hazards or hazardous conditions including flood control requirements, as well as any needed routine maintenance or repairs within assigned park areas.

  Issues citations and initiates arrests as needed, which involves handling firearms and police equipment, in response to violations of Federal, State, and local laws and City ordinances.

  Patrols parks and recreational areas, including the Riverwalk by a variety of transportation methods, including but not limited to patrol sedan, truck, SUV, bicycle, ATV, boat, and foot.

  Prepares reports as necessary.

  Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

  Job Requirements

  High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

  Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

  Based on qualifications, applicants for this position may be required to pass the San Antonio Park Police Training program which may include the FTO program within six months of employment.

  Applicants for this position will be required to obtain an unrestricted Texas Peace Officer's license (certification) issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) prior to the start date of employment.

  Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor) and Family Violence Convictions.

  Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  Employment Conditions

  Must be able to successfully pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT) which takes the form of a job simulation exercise based on the obstacle course at the SAPD Training Academy. The PAT is comprised of two parts. Part I is an obstacle course run which is timed. Part II of the Physical Ability Test (PAT) is untimed and includes a Hand Gun Simulation. Both parts assess a candidate's ability to sustain pursuit of a suspect while encountering common obstacles and tasks.   Must be able to successfully pass a medical evaluation by a physician employed by the City of San Antonio to determine the Applicant's physical ability and well-being to withstand the rigors of law enforcement related activities.

  Must be able to successfully pass a psychological evaluation administered by a Psychologist/Psychiatrist employed by the City of San Antonio to determine the Applicant's mental clarity and stability with respect to the high stresses associated with law enforcement activities.

  Must be able to successfully pass a screening for illicit drug use and a polygraph examination administered by a licensed polygraph examiner hired by the City of San Antonio.

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and city ordinances.

  Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and procedures.

  Skill in use of police vehicles and modern law enforcement firearms, weapons, and specialized equipment.

  Ability to respond rapidly and effectively in emergency situations.

  Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.

  Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

  Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
