Job Overview
The Safety Manager ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position reports to the location’s General Manager and oversees a support staff. The SM is responsible for ensuring the safety and training requirements in the contract, including but not limited to: safety program requirements, driver screening and training requirements, all staff training requirements, accident and incident prevention and reporting requirements and FMSCA/FTA drug and alcohol testing and reporting requirements for all physical locations.
Salary Range = $100k to $125k
Administers driver hiring and compliance process (e.g., interviewing and driver selection; collecting applications; criminal background checks; credit reports; drug/alcohol testing; fingerprint checks; DOT physicals; TB Skin tests; motor vehicle records checks; I-9 forms).
Provides direction and guidance to location trainers. Develops and monitors contents of classroom training to ensure compliance. Teaches classes as required. Schedules and conducts re-cert and retraining.
Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries, including accident investigation, accident reports, accident files, and accident register, and follow up with the claims office and adjusters as necessary. Typically determines fault or preventability based on the facts identified at the scene. Provides post-accident counseling with drivers. Retrains drivers as necessary.
Prepares and submits accident-related compliance forms, maintains files, enters in DMO, or otherwise submits data to the appropriate person or organization.
Plans, schedules, and conducts monthly safety meetings based on region and company safety and safety training goals and objectives. Assists and participates in Safety Action Team meetings. Set up regular accident review committees to determine the preventability of accidents. Responds to appeals from drivers.
Provides assistance and training to drivers and attendants on passenger management and other safety-related issues.
Performs driver road checks of driver performance (e.g., pre-trip checks-lot-to-school and back; post-trip checks).
Provides various reports and analysis, including safety trends.
Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid CA CDL with passenger and airbrake endorsements.
Must be able to pass third party tester certification within ninety (90) days of employment, if necessary.
Must pass background check and drug screen.
3-5 years operations experience in a safety sensitive environment inclusive of OSHA, MIS, FMSCA, FTA, DOT and other federal compliance experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in EHS, business, logistics, or related field of study is preferred.
2+ years previous supervisory experience in safety or training role.
Knowledge of Web Risk, Trans Trak or similar computerized reporting systems preferred.
Proven adult classroom instructor experience. Train the Trainer experience preferred. Experience developing training agendas / plans is a plus.
Ability to demonstrate poise, tact, diplomacy and possesses good judgment and discretion when balancing the impact of an incident, the cost of liquidated damages, and the client relationship.
