SANE Trainee PRN

We've got a job to do and we’re looking for a qualified Sexual Assault (SANE) Registered Nurse Trainee like you to join our Texas Health family.

Work location: Travel amongst THR facilities through DFW: Responding to any of the following entities: SW Division - THFW, THAL, THAM, THAZ, THC, THHEB, and THSW. In the NE Division respond the following entities: THD, THDN and THK. Rural division: THC and THS (Stephenville).

Work hours: PRN, As needed.

Here’s What You Need

Associate's Degree Nursing Required; Bachelor's Degree Nursing Preferred

40 hour adult/adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner course. A completed 40-hour adult/adolescent SANE class meeting the minimum Texas Office of the Attorney Generals SANE Education requirements is preferred

2 Years As a clinical nurse required

RN - Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required And

BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly Required And

SANE - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner 12 Months Required And

TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course Upon Hire Preferred

Skills

A high degree of confidentiality, good customer service skills, excellent communication skills, self-directed and ability to function at a high level of autonomy and accountability.

What You Will Do

Achieve OAG SANE Certification to include completing didactic and clinical within one year of beginning training as per the signed SANE Education Agreement. Once certified will maintain certification. Renewal every two years requires ongoing clinical and continuing education.

Under guidance of a Texas Health SANE Preceptor learn to:

Provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to patients with a complaint of sexual assault by utilizing the nursing process to identify and prioritize needs

Assess patients psychological and social needs and makes appropriate referrals, collaborates closely with rape crisis center hospital accompaniment advocate to assure patients’ needs are met

Demonstrate ability to identify needs of patients with a complaint of sexual assault that would require physician intervention in a timely manner

Perform a complete sexual assault medical forensic examination including obtaining a medical history for the purpose of treatment, detailed head-to-toe assessment for trauma to include all body orifices and forensic specimen collection as indicated by history or examination findings; documentation to possibly include photography

Maintain chain of custody for each exam and adhere to evidence protocols

Administer all medications per program protocol

Maintain equipment in proper working condition and exercise fiscal responsibility with units resources

Under guidance of a Texas Health SANE Preceptor learn to:

Develop expertise and knowledge in performing medical forensic sexual assault exams to include but not limited to forensic science, trauma and related issues, legal case law and statutes, evidence collection procedures and emerging trends

Develop working knowledge of role responsibilities for law enforcement and medical investigative responsibilities to meet crime lab needs for processing evidence effectively

Develop expertise and knowledge to represent the medical forensic sexual assault exam during courtroom testimony

Develop expertise and knowledge to potentially participate in community education and prevention efforts in collaboration with or as assigned by leadership

Participates in professional development including staff meetings, in-services, and county, state or national levels of peer review as determined by the SANE Program leadership.

Under guidance of a Texas Health SANE Preceptor learn to:

Understand professional role boundaries as a SANE separate from crime lab, law enforcement, advocacy, prosecution and defense

Seek advice, collaboration, and support from program supervisors and leaders for managing challenging clinical care situations.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with TH staff and management, patients, families, physicians and outside agencies

Develop ability to interact with multidisciplinary teams, communicate program needs and work with peers to establish smooth functioning.

Adjust positively to multiple demands, ambiguity, role shifting and change.

Commit and cover required number of shifts, holiday coverage and other scheduling requirements as determined by the SANE Program

Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interest with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality

Maintain all Human Resource requirements for continued employment in a timely manner, such as but not limited to, licensure, annual employee health assessment, annual MyTalent modules and CheckIn evaluations.
