The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), recipient of theBeacon Award for Excellence, at Froedtert is a high-energy, 28-bedcritical care unit. The majority of MICU patients are severely ill andhigh acuity, requiring frequent nursing assessment and intervention.Patient populations commonly served include: septic shock, respiratorydisease requiring mechanical ventilation, GI bleeding, multisystem organfailure, pulmonary hypertension, DKA/HHNK, hypertensiveemergencies/crises, acute drug overdoses-intentional/non-intentional,and medication desensitization. With specialty therapies that mayinclude: Induced hypothermia, CRRT/CVVH, IL-2 infusions, rapid infusionfor emergent fluid or blood replacement, and flolan/remodulin infusions.The MICU unit culture is one of teamwork and comradery.
