  Description:

  Under direct supervision of certified and registered Respiratory Therapists, performs a variety of basic respiratory therapy procedures and assists in the evaluation of patient needs for respiratory therapy through observation. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

  Position Purpose:

  Under direct supervision of certified and registered Respiratory Therapists, performs a variety of basic respiratory therapy procedures and assists in the evaluation of patient needs for respiratory therapy through observation.

  What you will Do:

  Performs routine therapies in Respiratory Care such as IPPB, nebulizer treatments, aerosol, oxygen, and chest physiotherapy treatments.

  Monitors continuous ventilators in accordance with physician orders after proving competency.

  Performs bedside pulmonary function exams to determine the therapeutic needs of patients.

  Sets up and monitors diagnostic equipment such as oximetry and capnography and recommends therapeutic changes based on the data collected.

  Confers with patients to explain the procedure and elicit cooperation during therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

  Documents diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on the patient's medical record noting type of procedure performed, pertinent clinical information, patient/family teaching performed, patient responses to therapy and any other pertinent information necessary.

  Reports therapies to be conducted and conditions of patients to nursing staff and relief personnel.

  Disassembles, cleans and sterilizes departmental equipment. Reassembles equipment when sterilized according to established policy and procedure.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Requires enrollment in an approved respiratory therapy training program and must successfully have completed two (2) semesters of formal training.

  Maintains a high level of professionalism, which positively promotes the image of MercyOne Medical Center.
