About Research Technologist

  The Pathology Department is seeking a Research Technologist who under general supervision, performs research on HIV, HCV, SARS-CoV-2, and HSV-2 in a Bio Safety Level 2 setting. The candidate will need to follow established procedures and protocols utilizing appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets-up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  Follows established protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory experiments which may include whole blood processing, tissue processing for microscopy, antibody testing by ELISA and Western blot, RNA and DNA extractions, PCR, and viral loads assays.

  Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as thermocyclers, pipettes, centrifuges, freezers, incubators, light microscope, and Bio Safety Cabinets.

  Keeps and updates lab records, including notebooks and databases.

  Keeps sample repository and pulls/aliquots samples as requested for testing.

  Prepares and ships supplies to active study sites. Receives, process and documents samples from active study sites.

  Performs general lab housekeeping and miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

  Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  Good oral communication and organizational skills are required.

  Knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.

  Collaborative and cooperative team spirit are required.

  Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job

  The employee may be required to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods of time (up to 75%).

  The employee is required to use hands/fingers to touch, type and/or feel. Will operate computer keyboard, and/or laboratory instruments, small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides.

  Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope) for laboratory positions.

  Position is primarily in a laboratory environment where exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed for assigned work areas. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.

  May be required to move lab equipment and/or supplies, usually less than 40 pounds, from one research area to another (within the main lab building or to other campus buildings).

  While most of our positions require on-site presence; where positions are approved for alternate work locations (remote work) – specific expectations will be outlined and documented; and the safety of work environment, security of work information, and productivity measures are regularly reviewed with employees and subject to on-going approval by management. Staff should be aware of and report other remote work implications and requirements that may impact them or the organization.

  Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices. Annual training and testing requirements.

  Some areas maintain 24/7 operations and may require rotating shifts, evening, overnight, weekend, or holiday schedules. Some areas require on-call duties.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field

  Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Some related research laboratory experience and knowledge of good lab practices preferred.Classified Title: Research Technologist

  Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($45,528 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
