Job Summary
As a key part of its sustainability agenda GKN Aerospace is making significant investments in the development of hydrogen based electrical propulsion systems. In delivering an important element of that agenda, GKN has partnered with a series or Tier 1 aerospace companies to deliver a complete Liquid Hydrogen propulsion system. The programme H2GEAR is part funded by the UK government, through the ATI and delivered within the UK ecosystem more widely. The H2GEAR team is seeking a Technician who will assist in the construction of two of the major components – a Cryogenically enabled electrical motor.
The first Motor has been designed and components made however there remains a significant task to assemble the items and there is significant ongoing technical work required to establish the processes to do this. The follow on, larger component is still in design and will be completed during 2024. Once completed this will be a world first.
As a Technician you will draw on your practical skills and 'hands on' manufacturing experience. Using your experience, you will help create solutions to problems, you will propose adaptations and modifications to tasks, tools and processes and document them. You will execute tasks according to plan, and your proactive nature will enable you to adapt to new technology areas quickly. You should have a methodical approach to work and be able to accurately follow detailed work instructions and equipment operating procedures.
Job Responsibilities
Support any necessary 'hands on' development test work and. development trials that are required to meet Work Package/Work Stream delivery objectives
Support the ordering of materials and consumables
Support planning of project and technical work as required
Support the GTC Technology team with equipment commissioning and development trials often using novel tooling and equipment/machinery
Raise COSSH assessment and manage the COSSH assessment register to ensure that all materials and chemicals used at the GTC have appropriate approvals
Record results showing a high level of diligence and detail with respect to note taking, test and development work observations
Support technical problem solving, which may be exploratory or exploitation related.
Ensure adherence to EHS policies and procedures for your activities, and you will contribute to a proactive EHS culture in the wider team
How You'll Contribute
To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
Essential:
Experience in a dextrous manufacturing role, (eg, experience in soldering of very fine wires from transducers onto joining cables or other extreme of mechanically bolting together test rigs)
Experience in detailed assembly of mechanical & electrical equipment
Hands on' manufacturing or component/process development experience
Experience of the H&S requirements of an operational environment e.g. COSHH
Desirable:
Familiarisation with electrical works , joining techniques , soldering
Craft apprenticeship, ONC/HNC or equivalent
Experience of CAD system
Experience installing Vacuum or cryogenic equipment eg pipework and valves
Familiarisation with electrical works, joining techniques, soldering, crimping
Experience in installation of temperature & pressure sensors including associated instrumentation
