About Health and Safety Coordinator

  Description

  SUMMARY:Coordinates delivery of health, dental, and disabilities services to Headstart children and families. Responsible for ensuring that the AVCP Headstart program is in compliance with the Health/Safety/Disabilities areas of the Headstart Performance Standards. Functions as the liaison with State of Alaska, federal, regional, and local health providers.

  PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  Establishes and monitors program for on-going health, dental, nutritional, and developmental screening, referral, follow-up, treatment.

  Provides staff training on Health and disabilities

  Develops monthly reports on screenings for each local program to assist staff in arranging needed services. Includes names of children who have immunizations coming due.

  In collaboration with other staff members, writes, coordinates, monitors, implements, evaluates and responsible for the Health, Safety and Disabilities sections of the AVCP Head Start service plan.

  Monitors the service plan throughout the year and ensures its compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards.

  Provides parent education on preventative health practices, early intervention, nutrition and childhood disabilities.

  Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the Health and Disabilities area in the Performance Standards.

  Collaborates and develops working relationships with public health nurses, YKHC Dental Program, WIC Program, and other health related service providers.

  Establishes relationships with school district personnel and other service providers regarding services to children with special needs.

  Provides training as needed for local and central office staff in specific health and developmental procedures that may be used with individual children.

  Collaborates with the Family/Community Coordinator, establishing procedures for transition of children with disabilities into and out of the Headstart program.

  Responsible for the development and operation of the Health Advisory Committee.

  Participates in referral procedures when appropriate.

  Ensures that a minimum of 10% of the Head Start enrollment is reserved for children with special needs

  through October 31 of each school year. Encourages and assists staff in recruitment of children with special needs.

  Ensures appropriate mainstreaming of children with disabilities including appropriate technical assistance for local staff in ensuring each childs optimum participation in the program and that IEPs are followed in the classroom.

  Ensures health, nutritional, and safety education are part of the early childhood curriculum.

  Provides assistance, consultation, and/or training for Head Start staff, families, and other service providers as needed on health, nutrition, safety and disability issues.

  Submits required written reports including Quarterly Reports, PIR.

  Carefully tracks all disability services. Acts as the key management staff member regarding health, safety and disability issues.

  Participates in appropriate trainings as they become available locally or out of town.

  Plans, organizes, sets up and facilitates meetings, teleconferences and trainings as needed.

  Conducts on-site visits to Headstart Centers.

  Analyzes work load and divides into manageable segments by setting realistic goals for self. Monitors, revises and meets those goals. Assist other personnel in doing the same.

  Maintains strict confidentiality of the department and clientele.

  EXTRA DUTIES ASSIGNED:

  Assist the Program Manager in the operation of the AVCP Head Start program

  Assist in the on-going development of the budget

  Oversee some Head Start site functions

  Make sure on-going data input is complete and accurate and assist staff as needed

  Keep track of Educational Development and Teaching Gold

  Monitor Health and Safety Environment of the facilities
