Health Research, Inc. Job Description:
Responsibilities
The Research Scientist I will contribute to the CDC's National Action Plan to detect and respond to antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens and prevent spread of resistant infections. This work will contribute to improved detection of resistant bacteria, and provide insight into infection control, investigations and the burden of these bacterial infections.
The Research Scientist I will contribute to clinical testing utilizing conventional and molecular methods. The incumbent will accession specimens, and perform bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Molecular testing methods will include real-time PCR, Next generation sequencing (whole-genome and minION), DNA sequencing, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Additionally, the incumbent will maintain specimens, utilize a clinical information management system, provide results of testing and contribute to laboratory testing and data analysis for special studies. The Research Scientist I will also contribute to assay development to understand the utility of conventional and molecular methods for the detection and understanding of drug resistant bacteria. In addition, the incumbent will contribute in a significant way to manuscript and SOP writing and provide presentations to the laboratory, the center, and at conferences as needed. Other appropriate related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Molecular Biology or related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in that field and one year of research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
At least three years of experience in medical technology, molecular biology or microbiology. Skills including specimen accessioning, working with bacterial isolates and primary specimens. Molecular work experience using real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, next generation sequencing (whole genome sequencing and minION), and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry on clinical specimens. Experience with bacterial culture and antimicrobial resistance testing. Experience with assay design and development of multiplexed real-time PCR assays. Experience with whole genome sequencing data analysis and data management. Strong written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to analyze data, prepare data summaries, and write scientific abstracts and papers.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Travel, up to 25%, will be required.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting is unavailable.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a lab coat, lab gloves, and face shield or bench shield.
