The Pittsburgh Girls Study is an ongoing 22-year longitudinal study that began with 2,450 5-8-year-old girl recruited from neighborhoods in the city of Pittsburgh. We are seeking a full-time Research Associate to join our team for a new National Institute of Mental Health funded 5-year project on developmental antecedents to suicidality in Black youth. The study includes assessing hypothesized risk and protective factors in children whose mothers are participants in the PGS Child participants will be recruited in early childhood (ages 5-8 years) and followed over time using qualitative and quantitative approaches to derive reliable and valid methods for identifying targets for reducing the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in Black youth. We seek an individual with experience in data collection with children and who has demonstrated cultural competence in working with Black families.
The Research Associate will assist with recruitment and conduct all data collection activities as part of a team. Data collection will include survey and interview methods, structured tasks for the child and dyad, and psychophysiology. Research Associates will be involved with data entry and cleaning and other activities to support project implementation and evaluation and integrity. There are opportunities for collaborating and leading data analysis and dissemination, and for supervising undergraduate interns. They will work within a large team and interact with faculty from diverse disciplines including psychology, psychiatry, social work, and public health. This is an excellent opportunity for bachelor’s level student to develop and/or deepen skills in applied research methods, ethics, and statistics, and to refine goals for further training and education in the field of child health.
This position is grant funded.
Responsibilities:
Assist with recruitment, scheduling appointments, obtaining written consent forms, collecting data by conducting phone or face to face interviews for research project(s).
Maintain accurate documentation.
Bachelors degree required preferably in Psychology or related field.
Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred.
Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
