Mesirow Capital Markets and Investment Banking is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and entrepreneurial Research Associate in Institutional Sales & Trading. This role is a unique opportunity for individuals with a strong background in finance, data analysis, and mathematics, and a growing interest in the capital markets and municipal bond market. The municipal bond market is a crucial component of public finance and capital markets, allowing state and local governments, hospitals, airports, universities, and other public entities to raise capital for essential projects and infrastructure. Responsibilities:
Support credit research in the municipal bond market, focusing on sectors like state and local governments, hospitals, airports, universities, real estate, life care, workforce housing and project finance. This involves evaluating financial statements, covenants, budgetary reports, and other pertinent documents to assess creditworthiness.
Provide direct support to the Head of Research in managing and analyzing a wide range of market and credit data related to municipal bonds. This includes data collection, validation, and interpretation to assist in making informed trading decisions.
Support the Head of Research in preparing detailed credit reports, presentations, and briefings for the traders, sales team, public finance department and clients.
Develop, maintain, and enhance market pricing and data dashboards, utilizing advanced data analysis techniques to support market analysis and trading strategies.
Collaborate closely with the research team to identify market opportunities and risks, contributing to the development of comprehensive market outlooks and strategies.
Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of research methodologies and processes.
Requirements:
Recent college graduate or professional with up to 2 years of experience, preferably with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Data Science, Economics, Computer Science or a related field.
Demonstrated interest in capital markets, with a keen focus on the municipal bond market and public finance.
Basic to intermediate knowledge in data analysis and dashboard creation. Prior experience in these areas, whether through academic projects, internships, or early career work, is highly desirable.
Entrepreneurial spirit with a strong desire to learn and grow in the field of capital markets.
Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with a proven ability to tackle complex problems.
Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
Strong organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Familiarity and experience with financial analysis software and programming languages (e.g., Python, R)
