This position functions under the supervision of a tenure-track/tenured faculty member to conduct experimental research. Evaluation is based on accomplishments and overall effectiveness of assigned projects. May supervise research and student assistants. Contributes to the university’s mission through teaching, research and service, some variation by academic unit.

Major/Essential Functions:
Maintains a safe, collaborative and professional work environment.
Plans experiments and reads the current literature.
Conducts experiments (molecular biology, biological chemistry, electrophysiology, protein expression, protein purification, microinjection of RNA, and other methods.)
Data analysis and presentation, manuscript, grant and report writing.
Responsible for conducting scientific research on a specific project and for publishing findings and results of the research.
In conjunction with the PI, develops and determines research procedures to be utilized in a specific project.
Designs and performs laboratory experiments as part of the research.
Prepares publications in timely manner.
Presents data at national meetings.
Networks at local and national meetings.
Applies for external funding.
Analyzes and interprets data obtained in research and laboratory experiments.
Supervises junior laboratory members, troubleshoots problems and experimental procedures with other lab members, provides precise practical instruction to lab members.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated expertise in contemporary membrane protein research, with an area of focus in ligand gated ion channels.
Strong direct expertise in designing, planning, and conducting relevant experiments, including protein engineering, protein expression in different heterologous hosts, membrane protein purification and characterization, electrophysiological recording, and other biophysical approaches.
Expertise with applying for external funding.

Required Qualifications:
MD and / or PhD in biochemistry, bioengineering, biophysics, neuroscience or closely related area.
Postdoctoral training in biophysics, structural biology and/or neuroscience and related areas.
Demonstrated success in moving research projects from ideation, through methods development and application, experimentation, to drafting of a manuscript and publication.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Advanced writing skills (including but not limited to abstracts, research manuscripts, grant applications, public releases in lay language).
