About Research Assistant | Laboratory of Neural Systems

  Organization Overview

Our visual perception of the outer world is the creation of active brain processes that structure and select the information provided by the eyes. The Laboratory of Neural Systems is interested in the neural processes that form object representations as well as those that allow attention to make those representations available for cognition. Our laboratory aims to understand the inner workings of this system, from the level of individual cells to the interactions of brain areas, in order to answer questions such as: How does face selectivity emerge in a single cell? How is information transformed from one face patch to another? What is the contribution of each face patch to different face recognition abilities, like the recognition of a friend or a smile? How do the different face patches interact in different tasks? And how is information extracted from a patch when a perceptual decision is made?

  Overview

The Laboratory for Neural Systems works to uncover the neural mechanisms of cognition, including mechanisms of perception, memory, emotion, cognition, and action. It is part of thePrice Family Center for the Social Brain (https://www.rockefeller.edu/news/31601-a-new-interdisciplinary-center-devoted-to-the-neuroscience-of-social-behavior-has-been-launched-with-a-25-million-gift/) , the exceptional neuroscience community at The Rockefeller University, and is engaged in multiple collaborative research programs.

We are looking for an individual with a strong neuroscience background and an interest in the functional organization of the primate brain to join us as a research assistant. The ideal candidate would have research experience with fMRI or NHPs, and interested in both experimental and data analytic work. The research assistant will work alongside a postdoc generating a multi-dimensional characterization of functional specializations in the primate brain as part of a large-scale collaboration, the Human and Mammalian Brain Atlas (HMBA), funded by the Brain Initiative and headed by Allen Institute, to decipher the genetic underpinnings of functionally specific brain circuits in the NHP and human brain. Motivation, enthusiasm, ambition, general qualities as a scientist and person, and a genuine interest in the project are highly valued. This role offers a unique chance to gain expertise in imaging neuroscience, genetic analysis of neural tissue, and understanding the neural basis of cognition. This position is ideal for those aiming to excel in graduate programs in neuroscience or related fields. A commitment of 2 years is expected.

  Responsibilities

  Responsibilities include:

Conduct NHPs fMRI experiments with cutting-edge techniques

Develop new experimental setups and assist in behavioral training to learn tasks

Analyze data to get functional mapping - e.g. fMRI, behavioral, transcriptomical data

Present and write up results in lab and scientific meetings

Perform other project related tasks as needed

  Qualifications

  Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, Computer Science or a related field

Experience with collecting data and data analysis

Basic programming skills or willingness to learn (e.g. MATLAB, tcsh, bash, python)

  Experience troubleshooting hardware and/or software

  Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

Strong work ethic and analytical skill, with an interest in neuroimaging techniques

  Preferred:

Experience with fMRI data, training animals, and/or psychophysical research is a plus but not mandatoryThe Rockefeller University does not discriminate in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service or other non-merit factor.
