About Research Assistant

  The Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a Research Assistant will primarily assist in the day-to-day logistical and operational tasks for various research studies in the Department, with a focus on projects that provide theoretical analysis of modern deep learning architectures and their generalization ability. The Research Assistant will interact with the investigators and collaborators in a research environment. This person will be designing, implementing and analyzing computational experiments, as well as writing and analyzing standard and non-standard reports. This person will also assist in carrying out theoretical investigations for models of generalization in deep neural networks, and using these models to derive tighter, non-uniform, generalization bounds for deep models. This person will also contribute to the research efforts of the PI’s research team, presenting in group meetings and collaborating with other students’ projects.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.

  Maintain a good working knowledge of state-of-the-art literature on generalization in deep learning.

  Perform data collection and analysis under the supervision of Sr. researchers.

  Implement computational experiments to test for potential theory and to gain experimental insights.

  Design methodology to evaluate the specific learning problems and obtained machine learning models.

  Implement experiments to validate different trained models.

  Maintain paper and computerized research files.

  Participate in weekly research group meetings with the PI as well as with related collaborators in this project.

  Prepare mandatory reports and documents/protocols.

  Present and communicate results and progress updates clearly.

  This description is a general statement of required duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis; the Research Assistant will perform other related duties as assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Adequate knowledge in statistical learning and deep learning methodologies.

  Familiarity and experience with programming, particularly for applied machine learning.

  Familiarity with deep learning coding frameworks (pytorch, tensorflow, or similar).

  Willingness to learn specialized software used in the research.

  Starting Salary Range: Min $17.00 - Max $30.00 HRLY ($50,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
