　　Duties and Responsibilities

　　Conduct field and laboratory work in support of research projects in the ‘Indigenous Ecologies Collaboratory’ – a collective laboratory group focused on indigenous socio-environmental systems, decolonial feminist science praxis, and biocultural diversity. Current research projects include community-driven monitoring of water quality in Mexican Indigenous communities, agrochemical analysis of natural spring water, and Indigenous Ecologies.

　　The Research Assistant is a full-time staff position within the SES working with and reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dra. Marlene Brito-Millan. For fieldwork responsibilities, the Research Assistant will assist in measuring water quality, identification, and quantification of ecological bioindicators, and interviewing local water caretakers about customs and practices. Primary laboratory responsibilities include laboratory protocol development for agrochemical analyses, maintenance of laboratory inventory, and support with training students. The candidate will also undertake systematic literature reviews as necessary. This position requires participation in field data collection in Mexico. Fluency in Spanish language (written and oral) is required as the position calls for involvement in writing reports back to communities as well as in scientific articles.

　　Loyola University Chicago’s School of Environmental Sustainability ( SES ) is a degree-conferring academic unit that opened in September of 2013 (see www.luc.edu/sustainability). The SES is housed in a LEED certified geothermal building that includes new state-of-the-art research laboratories, a 3,100 sq ft greenhouse, 2 aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel laboratory, and several teaching laboratories.

　　Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

　　Bachelor’s degree in related field and zero-one year of related experience.

　　Qualifications

　　A Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Biology or a related environmental field is required. Experience working in field-based data collection and laboratory analyses is preferred. Spanish fluency written and oral is required. Requires physical exertion, commitment to safety and meticulous data recording and analysis. A valid driver’s license and US passport are required. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate self-motivation, humility, reliability, professional conduct, a strong work ethic, and excellence in teamwork and mentoring.
